I don’t know if my feelings are valid and wether to mention it but I spoke to my dad about wanting to get my daughter a play kitchen for her next birthday and he has gone out and brought one for her (her birthday isn’t until November btw). Now I don’t want to be rude and I appreciate the gift but I really wanted to be the one to get her that and I was waiting for her birthday so it could be her big present, I don’t know if my dad has brought it to stay at his house for when she goes over or it’s for her to bring home as I haven’t replied to his message, but either way I feel sad now because he’s taken away what I wanted to get for her and what I’ve been planning for a while and I know if I say something he is going to moan and say something like oh can’t I buy her things or something stupid, am I overacting if I said I didn’t want her to have it? Is that too mean? I don’t even know how I would go about saying that to him.

I honestly would just appreciate that he is trying to help you out and spoil his grandchild in the process, just maybe next time don’t mention what you’re planning as they can often see it as a hint (or at least my parents do). Can you let this one slide and think of an alternative present like a garden swing/ slide/ rocky horse? X

My mum does this a lot, but I just take the win that I don’t have to pay for something 😂🙈
It’s annoying when it’s something big and that’s what you were planning for a birthday and have to think of something new but at the end of the day, it’s about the little ones being happy.
I would let it slide but be clear next time you say something out loud 🙈

Could you not just do what you suggested and ask him to keep it at his house. explain to him that you wanted to get her one and it’s a big deal for you, but you’d be happy for her to have one from them at theirs (and for them to store it until you’ve gave yours?)

I'd personally let it slide as he probably just got really excited and thought he was being helpful. If I felt that strongly about it I'd have it stay at their place. But generally I'd just change my own behaviour and not tell them about things I'd get upset about if they messed with.

You're not overreacting, but in all honesty. Children don't appreciate things and where they come from at this age. They don't get it at all. Everything is exciting and great. One year my eldest was more impressed with the balloons than the gifts. So although it would have been nice to come from you, in reality it doesn't really matter

I’m sure he did it with love and to help you. You can say “thank you but next time please ask me before you buy it.” Also since you now know that’s what he’ll do, don’t mention anything next time.

Thank you guys 🥰 I’ve decided I’m not going to mention it and just let it be as he’s already got it I will probably suggest for it to stay at there house so that I can still get her one for home ❤️

I had this with my son, told my partners grandparents we were getting him a swing and they went and bought one 🙄 they got told to send it back, nicely of course but yea it’s frustrating.

Honestly I would appreciate the gesture. I wish I had a dad who bought anything at all for my boy. Even for Christmas I basically have to ask for him to remember it much less thought of it so he isn't the only grandpa that didn't send a gift (we live far but his other grandparents much father and they always call) and he sent a gift card which arrived Christmas Day, and which is fine I bought him something with it for after and I'm grateful for that but to me it shows a lack of excitement and thought. I grew up with one grandma who couldn't care less of me and I hate to think my boy will feel the same from my dad. :( just a thought.
