Maternity leave

I was thinking about this today.. maybe when I’m 7 1/2 - 8 months. Depending on how I feel. You?

Likely to go on mat leave 2/3 weeks before the due date seen as I work from home most days, so I won’t have to commute in for the last few months.
I’d say depends on your role, how much mat leave you’re entitled too and how much you like your job. 🫢

You won’t want to be stressed especially towards the end of your pregnancy.

I’m a nurse so I’m on my feet for 13 hours and the ward can be pretty heavy at times. I have 6 weeks annual leave that Ill be taking before starting mat leave so unsure if leave mat leave as long as possible to get more time off when baby comes and I’ll still have that 6 weeks before? First baby so all new to me

Oh okay so from my understanding, not sure if it’s different for each field of work.

In my instance, holiday is accrued annually starting from Jan, so I would use my annual leave first (remaining for 2024) then utilise my Mat leave once I’ve used all my holiday time.

So in your instance, I’d assume you could utilise 6 weeks holiday first, then use your Mat leave and then in 2025 (don’t quote me though) you can use some of your holiday for the new year as part of your Mat leave.

I’d say just see how you feel, you might be okay seen as you will be pretty active throughout your pregnancy, just listen to your body and stop working when you feel your body needs the rest.

From 39 weeks as I work from home

I’m planning on maybe going on Mat leave 2 weeks before my due date but like others have said taking annual leave before hand as well. Not sure how much I’ll have to spend but hopefully atleast another two weeks so I can be off work from beginning of sept. A month before I’m due

I'm due October 24th and probably using mat leave from the start of October and annual leave from the start of September. With my first I made the mistake of putting my mat leave for due date, had her a week early and it was such a faff starting mat leave early and sorting it all out. I have gestational diabetes again so likely to give birth from 37 weeks again.

Depends if your only entitled to stat maternity allowance/pay only then they pay it for 9 months so for me I stayed right up to the end to try and stay off

Wow I am surprised nurses are allowed to work. In Czech Republic as soon as pregnant they have to go on maternity as it's high risk job (unless nurse at GP or some quieter clinic) but in hospitals immediately maternity. Ohh well, in CZ maternity lasts 1-4 years!! 95% women stay home for 3years.

Was just at the maternity ward and the nurse was talking about her mat leave. She said for the first she was off from 16 weeks due back pain so I would say don’t worry to much just do what you can x
I know nhs just changed there mat leave policy so double check I think you get more time off

Babys due 20th October and I start my maternity leave 9th September however the first 2 week is annual leave

I'm gonna take annual leave from end of September then maternity about a week before due date. I work from home 3 days a week but will be requesting to work from home full time from end of August.

I’m going to work for as long as possible, I don’t return from my maternity leave until next month & then due again on the 1/10, last time I saved all my holiday and used that before I had my baby but you have to start your maternity from the day your baby is born rather than using holiday! I’m not sure if that’s the same for everyone x so I’ve ended up with some leftover holiday at the end of my maternity too x

Haven’t even gone back from my first pregnancy yet 🥲 Will work however much I need to qualify for mat leave again x

I’m an OT so I have similar work pressures. This is my second pregnancy but with my first, I took 3 weeks of annual leave and then started my maternity leave a week before I was due (which was the latest I was allowed to leave it). Unlucky for me, I gave birth 3 weeks early so ended up only having a few days off!! This just meant my mat leave got triggered the day I gave birth

This time I’m probably going to just do the same and take about 4 weeks off (it doesn’t matter if it’s AL or mat leave), maybe 5 given that I know I was early with my first
