Strep B swab?

I had my 36 weeks (I am 36+6) midwife appointment and it was basically quick blood pressure and urine test. When does NHS provide the Strep B swab? I thought it was this week 🤣

I am pretty sure they don’t provide it by default? They didn’t in my first pregnancy anyway.

I had StrepB at 11 weeks pregnant, it was found in a urine culture.

@Maria same. Have you been offered anything else? I haven’t. Just been told I ll need to go in as soon as labour starts and be given some antibiotics. However, sometimes urine cultures don’t pick it up and its swabs but I believe that these don’t take place routinely in the UK.

They don’t offer it routinely. It was picked up for me from a swab in early pregnancy

I had it at my 36 week appt but was told it was because my hospital is taking part in a trial for it

everyone has said it. it's not routinely offered, I had one because I thought my waters had gone so they were checking for infection.

My midwife centre is part of a trial so it was done automatically at my booking appointment but I’m not expecting one later on. You might be able to request it if you are particularly worried?

Mine was at 36 weeks, I only got offered it as I’ve tested positive in the past though

I had my 36 week app on Tuesday and handed it back then. Was given the swab at 34 week app to do myself. I believe my area is trialling it for all women who are 34 weeks before 31/03/2024 x

They don’t provide them unless you meet certain criteria. I had one beecause my area are taking part in a research trial but they aren’t routinely given x

They are not routinely offered on the NHS but some areas are trialling them to see if they should become routine. Here is more information on why they don't currently offer it routinely. https://gbss.org.uk/info-support/group-b-strep-testing/should-i-get-a-group-b-strep-test/

They don't do it routinely. I asked for one on my last app and am having it today when I see my midwife. 37 weeks tomorrow

@Elsa I'm having a C-section soon and was told I will be on antibiotics via drip and that will be enough.

@Maria sorry to ask but was the csection decision related to the gbs?

I was offered it but declined. I was offered it because I had an infection after delivery last time but baby was unaffected - so they weren’t convinced it was GBS as baby had no evidence of infection. But they offered it as a reassurance if I wanted it.

I had strepB with my 3rd and was given antibiotics however your supposed to have them 4 hours before birth and he came within like 1hr 45 so wasn't enough time anyway .then i had to inject myself in the tummy for about a week after baby was born.. they tested me with my 4th - negative and now my 5th at 36 week app I did a swab and it's negative. They only tested me as I've had previous however I sometimes wonder why they don't do it routinely as the consequences if untreated can be quite concerning.

@Elsa no it's not. C-section is because I have a TAC and an occlusion stitch.

@Maria hope all goes well. xx
