Weaning tips…

Hiya! My son is 7 months old and started weaning/BLW at 6 months. He then got really poorly for just over two weeks so wasn’t eating food and only wanted milk. By the time he was better he was/is 7 months old. I’ve spoken to my health care visitor and she has said it’s now time to give him 3 meals a day and cut down his milk to 5oz bottles instead. I’m feeling very overwhelmed with it all. Trying to find a whole different routine. We have got breakfast going really well but I’m struggling to find perfect timing for lunch and dinner. It’s actually a lot harder than it sounds haha! Has anyone else been struggling with the change or just me? Also any tips?

I struggled too to find a new routine I love a good routine what are your bottle times x

All advice I’ve been given is that milk remains the main source of nutrition until they are 12 months old. So I wouldn’t put too much stress on increasing to 3 meals a day - with my first I didn’t do that until about the 8/9 month mark. My second baby is nearly 7 months and still isn’t really interested in food - there’s no way he’s going to be eating 3 meals for a long, long time. Introduce another meal, maybe dinner instead of lunch and see how he goes with that for a little while. Unfortunately some HV’s give really conflicting advice - you just be led by your baby! Xxx

With my first, I only started weaning at 7 months and then progressed to three meals by the time she was 8 months. Don’t let your health visitor scare you into rushing. It’s a lot to work out food, bottles and naps 🤪 Let baby drop their bottles naturally, so when they start drinking less or showing no interest. No point dropping milk if they’re not actually eating. Try and fit in a lunch or dinner next, then work up to three meals once you have your head around it a bit more. My second is nearly 11 months and hardly likes any food yet, so don’t worry. If you’re interested in his timings, he does the following which we probably moved to around 9/10 months: Bottle when he wakes (around 06:30/07:00) 08:00 breakfast 10:00-11:15 nap 12:00 lunch 14:00 bottle 14:30-15:30 nap 17:00 dinner Bed time bottle

My son eats virtually nothing 😂 but I try to offer food when I’m eating, and ideally the same or something that looks similar/is eaten in the same way (ie using cutlery or with hands) as he seems to do better that way! I thought the nhs guidance was 3 meals by 12 months, which would mean you’ve got ages yet before you need to worry about it 😊

Our boy was only have 2 meals a day at 7 months old and obviously milk. So try doing breakfast as that’s going well for you and dinner? We just give him whatever we eat now. But at the time we started giving him already made meals like in the jars or packets xx

My daughters one next week and is still on 1/2 meals. She’s not particularly interested, don’t cut down his milk as that’s his main source of nutrition.

@Amie our routine is messy at the moment but our old routine with bottles was 6am feed, 11am feed, 14pm feed, 5pm feed and then bed. Xxx

@Megan I thought this too. I didn’t think they were meant to have 3 meals a day until later! He’s only just turned 7 months it just feels really rushed. I’m very lucky in the fact that my son loves his food and doesn’t seem too bothered with not having a bottles. Xxx

@Nikki-Lee thank you! It generally feels like a lot haha! We are doing well today… he’s had breakfast and lunch with just one 5oz bottle but my god I can’t imagine doing this if we need to be out all day haha xx

@Emily this is exactly what I thought! My son is fussy with textures and stuff so he’s not really hands in with feeding. He doesn’t mind me feeding him but he’s a bit hesitant feeding himself. But he will do it sometimes xx

@Loretta Diane yeah that’s what I’m doing. I was thinking that maybe lunch or evening meal can be a packaged baby food so it takes the stress off a bit. Xx
