Sleep & School

Hey Mamas. This morning my little guy was not wanting to go to school. This is very unlike him. He's not super into mornings but he normally goes without complaint. This morning he cried... Silent tears, which are the worst! I comforted him. Gave extra hugs. Left him with the morning teacher for some extra cuddles. But my mama heart was breaking. When I got to the front I let his teacher know drop off was rough. She said that he's always so sleepy at school. They have told me before when he's had sleepy days. He's never been a great sleeper, but we're transitioning to a big boy bed (from CO sleeping) but he's been doing pretty well, IMO. I just thought it was a day here and there. She says he's sleepy all day, most days. Which broke my heart even more. I'm just lost on what it means and what to do. He's been in daycare full time since he was 8 months old. We switched to this school about month and a half ago. He's been getting better at counting and letters, and everyone loves him, so I thought he was doing good. I feel terrible, like I'm failing my boy. I'm scared that he's sad or having feelings that he doesn't know how to communicate. I'm not sure exactly what I'm asking, but just any advice I guess. Do y'all do melatonin or magnesium for sleep? Maybe if I get him down and sleep longer, it'll improve. Idk. I mean when I pick him up from school usually the first thing he does when he gets home is run! He's so active when I get him. The child they're describing to me isn't the boy I know.

My first thought is maybe he's coming down with something. The dry crying could be dehydration especially if it's in the morning.... or maybe he just needed to sleep in a little longer today they are still so little and don't understand scheduling they just go by how thier body feels he may of just needed some extra cuddle time to wake up more

I thought the same. He wasn't warm but it is allergy season, so I thought his allergies may be bothering him. He cried tears, but he didn't make noise, so I don't think he's dehydrated. I'm hoping it's allergies, but who knows. It threw me off when she said he's so sleepy daily.

I give my son Zyrtec every night all year long for allergies. It may also help him sleep. It’s a lot of change with the new school and sleeping arrangements so maybe just give him time. I’ve been seeing ads for Magnesium cream for kids to help with sleep. I can’t remember the brand. Does he nap well at school? Maybe he needs an earlier bedtime.

I agree with the magnesium cream after bathtime and an earlier bed time. 8sheep organics is a nice brand, I also use a roll on I purchased off of Amazon - mainly to aid any growing pains + help my son have a more restful sleep after a heavy activity day. If you can, I'd also do a midday pop up. Check for yourself to see how he's performing and what his surroundings are like. Maybe it'll help you get the full picture.
