My 5 month old has become so hard to get to sleep and when we finally do get him down, he’s only staying for asleep for about an hour max. He woke up just now after only 25 mins! I’d barely dozed off myself. He’s never slept through but now he’s so bad at sleeping it’s making me dread bedtime. Anyone else struggling? I’m so tired 😴😭

It’s most likely the four month regression (happens anytime between months 3-5). It’s so, so hard. Sleep is a roller coaster for the first year and beyond.

Currently going through this now. My Lo literally just woke up 3 times in the last 30 mins and I feel like I’m going to go crazy

Teaching baby to self settle in there cot themselves may help. You still start off with lots of hands on (tapping there bum, rubbing there head) and slowly pull back from it 💕

I'd lay him down drowsy but awake. Like she said above me. If you feel patting his bum lightly like vibrating until he sleeps is best then that's a good approach. But if you can handle 5-10-15 minute intervals of allowing him to self soothe then its just as effective. Every baby is different. Id try getting him comfy in his bed & just every now and then put your hand on him so he knows you're there if he cries. It should only take 10-15 minutes if that I promise. It will be rough the first 3-4 nights but then it's pretty easy. It's all a technique of figuring patting his bum then stopping for a bit then again then stopping for a bit- every 5 minutes stop for a few repeat until he falls asleep. Some babies excell with a 5-10-15 min of not really crying just making grumpy noises 🤣❤️ but I a thousand percent wouldn't be holding him until he falls asleep and transferring him- this can cause unhealthy attachments, anxiety etc. you want him to trust his sleep space is safe, not to think he needs you at all times.

Once a baby feels safe in their sleep space, they tend to sleep 7- 12+ hours a night

guess my kid has never felt safe because he’s never slept more than 10 hours at a time and he turned 2 a few months ago. That’s a bit ridiculous.

apologies but your advice is rubbish. A baby needs his mum and just because you hold the baby or meet his/her needs in other ways does not mean you teach the baby that it’s not safe. Also, what you are advising is the Ferber technique and this can cause babies a lot of distress. They do not learn that they are safe.. quite the opposite. They learn that their needs aren’t met and finally give up. I personally wouldn’t do that to any of my babies (mum of 3!). Self settling is a skill that can be learned in a more soothing way in which baby does not get distressed.

Sounds like a sleep regression and if it is unfortunately nothing will work you have to ride it out. Its completely normal and will end. Trust your instincts ❤️ I 1000%%%% disagree that holding your baby to sleep causes unhealthy attachments - just completely ridiculous!!! Some babies need that....and need it to learn that sleep is safe and that your a safe person. All babies learn to self settle in their own time.....there is no right and wrong and each baby will do it in their own time hence I say trust your instincts and follow babies lead. You will know when the time is right to possibly do some gentle sleep training or do nothing at all and will get better as baby gets older xx

I feel like you’re forgetting where she said all babies are different. Plus not once did she say she leaves her baby to cry. If I didn’t do this with my own, I’d have lost my mind. Any time as soon as I put my LO down, he’d cry, so I let him cry for 2/3 minutes and he’d be fast asleep. It’s all about letting them know you’re there, but that where they are sleeping is safe, which is what she’s trying to say. Once they know they’re in a safe space, they sleep…

this is ignoring the fact that babies have all different types of temperaments. The percentage of babies who simply go to sleep because they “know you’re there” without you actually supporting them and comforting them is very small. This is simply not how most babies fall asleep without being sleep trained - if your child falls asleep after only 2-3 minutes that’s great but it’s also very unusual and they must have a very easygoing temperament.

again, I said that all babies are different too 🤦🏻♀️. And this was from sleep training. It wasn’t always 2-3 minutes

you started off by saying that but by the end of your comment you’re making generalizations again 🤷🏼♀️ saying “one they know they’re in a safe space, they sleep” isn’t the same as saying that’s what worked for YOUR child specifically.

it’s not really a generalisation if you actually consider that once babies do feel safe away from mum/dad they are happier.
Mum and dad are a babies safe space, but once they understand that a bed/house/ person are another safe space, they are happier rather than crying etc

I still support my 2 year old to fall asleep. Do you really mean to suggest that he doesn’t feel safe in his crib because of this? He’s a very happy child, in general, as well.
