I went in for my midwife appointment at 28 weeks and they took blood but there was no mention of testing for gestational diabetes. Will they have tested then? Or do they only test if you have risk factors?

It’s standard in the US. It says it’s standard in the UK as well so I would definitely ask ur dr why you weren’t tested

The test for GD is a different test. Not everyone needs it though, only if your at risk so if they haven’t mentioned it I wouldn’t worry and be thankful you don’t have to do it as it sounds horrid 😂

I think it's only if you hit any of the risk factors. I got sent for it but when I got there they decided my first baby was 50g short on needing it and they refused to do it. Also I didn't have it with my first child.

I was only sent for the GD test after having sugar in my urine at my 28 week appt x

Only if there are risk factors or family history do the recommend testing!

Usually just if your bmi was high before pregnancy or if you're overweight, or if you have symptoms of GD or close family history of it x

I didnt get it either & my midwife said its because my BMI wasn’t high ☺️ I was expecting it as I believed it was mandatory but that was a lovely surprise that I didn’t need it x

I believe the biggest reason you're sent for a GD test is direct family history of diabetes or if your BMI is over 30 I haven't had one but they check blood pressure and presence of sugar and things in your urine so if they have no reason to test and no cause for concern you wont be tested, I'm 30 weeks now

I haven’t had one and currently 30 weeks! i think it depends if you hit certain risk factors so if you haven’t had one it likely means you’ve not hit those xx

GD test isnt standard in the UK. You get tested if your BMI is over 30, theres a history of GD or diabetes in the family, sugar found in urine, or if you had a big first baby. For medical reasons only basically

Not everyone does it. Only if you fit the criteria: high bmi, asian or african ethnicity, diabetes or gd history in the family, if one of your previously blood tests or urine samples showed high sugar.

In my previous hospital in Essex, they didn’t do the GD test but took lots of blood test. This time in Sussex, they took one GD test. I think it depends on trust to trust and also in regard to our family/ethnic history.

You have to have certain risk factors yourself and family history of diabetes x

I was tested not because of high bmi or family history but because baby and bump were measuring above the 97th centile at my 26 week appointment. I’m now 29 weeks on insulin and baby is weighing less than the 90th centile.

I asked my midwife about this and she said people who have got diabetes in the family or had females that had GD they get tested 🫶🏻

Thanks everyone!
