Discharged

Hi ladies! I had my daughter on 16th April at 33 weeks. And was wondering when you were discharged home? I personally don’t feel like I’m AT ALL ready to be discharged today. I feel emotional, I’m trying to establish my milk supply, I feel super uneasy about leaving my baby here, my stitches hurt so much at times and it hurts when I go to the toilet. I just feel really fragile and wiped out. When were you discharged to go home?

My daughter was born at 34 weeks and I had 5 days in hospital because she was in special care, I also ended up having to stay longer as they took me off medication which then caused me to develop preeclampsia. Can you speak to your hospital to see if they offer the 5 extra days? If she’s still in neonatal x

I delivered my son on a Friday at 34+1 & was discharged that Sunday well I signed myself out otherwise they wanted me to stay till Monday. You could always ask for 1 more day.

I had my son at 30+2, 2/23 8:29pm. I was discharged 2/25 @ 11am. But I didn’t have a c section or epidural. Your milk supply will not be established for close to a week and that’s not a reason to stay. Unfortunately everything you’re feeling and going through is the normal postpartum experience for a lot of women, especially those who have stitches whether it’s a c section or episiotomy. Most places discharge within 48-72 hours unless you’ve had complications.

My son was born at 33 weeks as well and I spent 5 days in hospital and then we would travel 3 times a day (including one drop off in the night )with my pumped milk to see the baby until he was discharged

My daughter was born at 23+4 weeks. I stayed in for 5 days but was offered another 5 days for 10 in total. I wanted to get out though. I hated being on the ward and was spending all my time in the NICU anyway. Also I missed my husband. It was 2021 and covid rules were still really strict so he could only visit a couple of hours a day and no one else was allowed to come to the hospital. We could spend unlimited time together with our baby on the NICU. My milk never really came in properly because of her extreme prematurity. I also found it more relaxing to try expressing the tiny amounts I did produce at home.

@Kiarra I know what I’m experiencing is not much different as this is my 3rd baby(had 2 normal deliveries) but this is first preemie baby and one I’m struggling with processing the most. I think I’m just feeling really anxious about everything and would like it if they wouldn’t mind me staying for at least 1 more day. I’m anxious about how I’ll be getting milk to her as I’m producing enough that I can pump it now but I don’t live close by.. also is it normal that I’m not feeling like I need to per until my bladder is really full? Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! I had my son at 32 weeks. I was able to go home after a week while he stayed in the NICU for another month. I had caught a cold while at the hospital and was coughing, had an ear infection. Coughing with the stitches was rough. I was exhausted. I really relied on my partner for help at that time. While I was home, he made sure I basically just ate, slept/rested and pumped. I tried to go to the hospital as much as I could at the time but he went all the time. Either he was there or I was, it was usually during overnight when we would be home together. I would sometimes at 3am feel sad and make my way to the hospital to be there. It's tough, but, once your little one is home you basically forget it all and are filled with joy.

I had my daughter at 33+5 and was discharged the next morning but I was in the boat as you and was in and out of neonatal for 6 days before being transferred to Transitional care to establish BF and being able to stay with her 24/7 until she was discharged

I had my son at 28weeks on the Tuesday was discharged the same day as he was medivaced to a more specialist hospital, you can ask for more time but honestly you’ll never feel ready.

My baby was born at 34+2 on Friday 5th Jan at 22:47. I had an emergency c section and I was discharged at midday on Sunday 7th Jan. Baby was in NNU was 12 days. I spent a week being driven to and from the hospital by my partner. I’d generally go in after breakfast and spend the whole day there - or potentially go home for a nap if needed. Our NNU unit had 3 bedrooms that we were able to book and stay in, so I stayed for the final three nights to establish breastfeeding and get used to baby’s routine before bringing her home.

@incog, I know moms that lived farther away and they would drop off milk every couple of days. And visit with baby. I will say that you might have to find someone to watch your other two and spend the night towards the end once you’re working on 48 hours oral feeds. I would talk to the dr about the urine output, I would assume it’s still lingering effects of an epidural? Idk I never had one, but my mom had issues with hers when she had me.

I had an emergency c section on the 4/16, im supposed to be discharged today. I get it, I'm 100% not ready to go home - I'm unable to lift my right leg (dragging it along) and am using a walker. Emotionally I'm all over the place ! I've spoken to multiple other Doctors (neurologist etc) and my OBGYN is the one who wants me discharged. I hope you feel better !
