Late dating scan

Hi, I’ve just received my dating scan and it’s not until 4 weeks time at which point I’ll be 14 weeks according to LMP but I’ve had 2 private scans and both times I’ve been measuring 5 days ahead. Is 14+5 too late? I’m really stressing about it. I desperately don’t want to wait that long and it throws out my plans of having a gender reveal around my birthday due to not being able to have scans within 2 weeks 😢

I wouldn’t stress! I was actually 13 weeks when I had my first scan ☺️

Nope, I had my 12 week scan and came out as 14 + 5, they were still able to do all the tests etc. The 20 week scan is when you find out gender so not sure what you mean about 2 within 2 weeks? :)

I was 14 weeks when I had mine, was absolutely fine 🥰. Also you can have two scans in two weeks ? There’s no harm of scans to you or baby. If that’s what you mean x

@Amy you can find out gender from 16 weeks, at a private scan :)

14+5 is fine for the dating scan. And you can have more than 1 scan in two weeks, they aren’t harmful.

@Jen oh right yeah ok fair enough - don’t know why you couldn’t have two within two weeks though :)

I found out gender at 10 weeks through the nipt test, it’s expensive but gave me peace of mind to know everything’s okay 🥰

If you are concerned about the screening tests, it all depends on babies size. I was 14+1 when I had my scan and she told me I was just able to have the measurements for the screening done. Had baby been slightly bigger I wouldn’t have been able to have the screening tests done. If you’re concerned you could ring up and see if they can get you in any earlier. We found out our gender from 14+5 so we had the dating scan then a few days later our gender scan. It was lovely and it meant our son could come with us 🥰 xx

It won’t be a problem for the dating scan but might wanna talk with your midwife about bringing it forward if you want the screening tests. Might be ok I’m not sure when the cut off is

@Yasmin how did you get a gender scan and where if private so early because everywhere I’ve looked won’t do a gender scan till 16 weeks x

@Olivia I was surprised reading that as well, they can’t always be certain so early!

They don’t advise having scans within two weeks of each other due to the scan putting heat on the baby’s heart, which takes about 7 days to recover from. I asked the private scan clinic the reason and this is what they told me. I would see if you can move your 12 week scan closer to your 12 weeks, then have your private scan as close to two weeks after as you can. The private clinic told me they have more restrictions than the nhs do on frequency of scans, I guess because they are more of a nice to have, and nhs will scan you more frequently if there is a medical need x

When I raised this I was told you aren’t able to have the combined screening for downs, Edwards and patau after 14+1. So I suppose if you want this screening, I would push to have a scan earlier? See if they have any cancellations or what they can do for you?

@Eloise that’s odd, I had all those tests at 14+5 🤷‍♀️ probably depends on the trust as with everything else!

@Amy absolutely that’s a possibility but worth highlighting to the poster just incase her trust is strict x

@Eloise oh yeah absolutely!

They say the closer to 12 weeks the better as the scan measurement is more accurate. After 14 weeks the measurement can go back to normal parameters and such, it will not be accurate.

With my last pregnancy I was almost 15 weeks before the 12 week scan. I was a bit miffed - I contacted my doctor at 4+1 to let them know I was pregnant and get appointments sorted (which was as soon as I knew). The scan at 15 weeks was the first appointment they gave me, and it was too late for the standard combined test. I had a separate blood test to check for downs syndrome etc, but was warned its less accurate than what would normally be done. On my notes they wrote something along the lines of "presented too late for combined testing" which just pushed my buttons because it was worded like it was my fault they couldn't fit me in sooner. Everything turned out fine and I now have a very happy healthy 1 year old! But I feel your frustration completely. Xx

Hiya how do you book a private scan? How much do they cost?

@Amie depends on the area, ranges between £40-70. Window to the womb do private scans or try Ultrasound Direct.
