Breast Feeding and Dummies?

What is everyone's thoughts on breast feeding and using dummies? Does baby have to have an established feed before using a dummy or can you use them straight away? Anyone had any issues from experience or found baby to be ok differentiating between the two?

I started dummy on day 7 or thereabouts. Baby is EBF and can definitely differentiate both.

After six weeks is the general advice in order to avoid creating any confusion.

I avoided until 6 weeks because I was worried about missing hunger cues and also wanted to make sure I latched every time he needed it to get my supply regulated etc but my sister in law has been using a dummy since birth and breastfeeding with no issues so I think it’s down to personal preference, your supply and your baby x

I tried using dummy at 7 weeks and my bf baby wouldn’t take it x

My health visitor told me the other day to hold off until 5/6 weeks or established feeding x

With my first I waited (on advice) and it took weeks for him to use the dummy properly, instead he’d constantly use my nipples as comfort which was exhausting. This time round I’ll be introducing one much earlier!

Having worked on a neonatal unit where we used dummies alongside breastfeeding I’ll absolutely be using one if I have a baby who wants to suck for comfort rather than to feed. I’ve never known it cause any issues ☺️

Why use a dummy?

My LG never had a dummy, I tried her with one countless times to aid comfort & try to minimise the comfort feeding from me but she was just never interested so I left it

We started using it at 4 weeks with my son. We bf and he has no issues with it but tbh he only ever has the dummy if he’s struggling to get off to sleep and as soon as he’s settled enough, he’ll spit it out so he could take it or leave it. My daughter had one from 3 weeks but again only to help settle to sleep

Will use dummy as it has more perks than not, like- helping to prevent SIDS for one. Everyone in the family from day 1 been with dummy and had no problems when taking it off later on or anything so 🤷🏼‍♀️

We planned on waiting to use a dummy however my baby came early and ended up in the NICU and was placed in an incubator so we weren’t allowed to hold her. We decided to give her a dummy early to soothe her and we’ve had no issues with this so far. She is also now 100% breast fed and had no issues with latching ☺️

I have used dummy with both my babies from birth and both exclusively breast fed no problem :)

Try Nuk dummies they have orthopaedic teets that have the same feeling as a nipple in the babies mouth so it might be easier, I’m not breastfeeding though so I wouldn’t know x

I gave in after a few days and had no problems breast feeding. He’s still going strong with it at 4 months and has a dummy sometimes too! Xx
