Can anyone advise on their experience with their baby using gaviscon for reflux & how they managed constipation? She’s 9w old.
Our baby was put onto Gaviscon this week (1 sachet per feed) & building up to that she would sometimes go a few days without a bowel movement but gp & hv said no concerns, but since being put onto Gaviscon she has been straining like mad to poo & it comes out very firm, maybe one or two bits each time she goes & I can tell it’s very uncomfortable for her.
It stemmed from being advised to try the reflux version of the milk she has but that started to constipate her & eventually she wouldn’t take to the formula. I initially started wondering if she had cmpa which is what made me contact gp originally but they said reflux.
We tried cooled boiled water but she really didn’t take to it & im unsure if she can have infacol/gripe water alongside this as I don’t want to be mixing too many things together.
I hate seeing her in this amount of discomfort & feel like a useless parent for not knowing what to do or how to help her, I feel like I’m constantly asking gp & hv for advice but nothing is helping her😔

She can have gripe water from 4 weeks 😊 hopefully she can get some sort of relief also try a warm bath or rubbing some oil into baby’s stomach in a circular motion? X

Is the Gaviscon helping with her reflux? My baby was on it for months, she was ok with it but I know many people who have struggled with constipation and end up taking their their baby back off it, have also heard of people using carobel as a thickener instead but have no experience of that ourselves. Maybe worth asking the GP for advice/alternative

We do cooled boiled water and gripe water! Gripe water doesn’t make them poo but helps with the pain!

thanks for the advice. It’s not been a full week yet so hard to tell a massive difference. There has been a slight improvement with it in terms of it not being as projectile & more controlled, but we haven’t seen much of a decrease in the amount brought back up yet

we did give her gripe water prior to this but unsure if we could use it alongside Gaviscon. She does love a bath & we’ve tried the bicycle kicks & tummy massages which do seem to help. We do struggle to burp her sometimes but it comes out fine the other end lol x

Are you using BM or formula?
When we used gaviscon for my LO’s feeds in breastmilk, we’d limit to 4-6 feeds of it a day (one sachet in each)
And then any other feeds (mainly through the night) we would use a comfort formula. It’s a thicker formulation so it didn’t trigger her reflux as badly, and also aids constipation so I felt like the 2 together worked well. Then eventually when I stopped breastfeeding we moved to comfort milk all together and stopped the gaviscon.
It can make them veeeeery constipated that’s the only issue with it, you’ll have to keep trialling other things or using it every other feed until you see what works. Or you’ll have to go back to the GP for the next best alternative x

We have been using gaviscon for a couple of weeks now and we just have a day off gaviscon and give him the ready made formula all day and that makes him go.

My wee man is on gaviscon and he was constipated for the first week on it but his stomach adjusted to it and he's fine now. Tried carobel thickener as well previously but it just gave him bad diarrhoea that didn't get any better so gaviscon has worked well in comparison.

We were on this with our LO we found it worked for a couple weeks then the reflux was really bad and she started being sick on it, The constipation was way worse. From birth she had been constipated but this was next level. We went on to aptamil reflux milk she is now 7 months and her reflux only flares when she is unwell. She's like a different baby, she's happy all the time and it's changed all our lives. We went through some shit to get where we are mind you but I'd highly recommend it. The milk is thicker and helps them keep it down, it is expensive but worth it. She was also constipated on it but then got use got use to it!

I preferred using carobel to thicken the milk. Didn’t really getting with gaviscon. Always used to lactolose for constipation

We also used a baby osteopath which I think really helped. X
