Does this look like a lip tie? From research it seems like it is, and my LO (just shy of 5 weeks) definitely has a tucked upper lip when feeding, and spillage out the sides of his mouth when on a bottle. I recognise if it is it’s probably mild but I’d love to hear from parents of LO’s with lip ties!
We’ve been struggling with colic or suspected silent reflux and when I noticed this possible lip tie I thought I may have discovered the underlying cause but when we spoke to the GP today they dismissed the possible tie saying if it is one it’s super mild and wouldn’t cause issue and didn’t really think silent reflux was likely since the Royal Children’s Hospital doesn’t recognise it and instead said, “It’s just colic, there is nothing you can do but wait for it to pass”.
We are getting a second opinion tomorrow but I’d love to hear others experiences with lip ties / colic / silent reflux so I can go into the next appointment as educated with both research and others real life experiences as possible.
Our colic / silent reflux symptoms are long bouts of crying (between 3-5 hours) specifically during and after feeds or after waking from being laid down flat. Purple crying until so exhausted he essentially passes out asleep, unable to be soothed by anything. Arching or back and neck, choking, coughing and screaming after big swallows or burping after feeding. Frequent hiccuping, congested nose/throat if laid down flat. He will only sleep if kept upright unless he’s had a long bout of crying and is too exhausted to wake fully when placed on back. He doesn’t throw up ever and has good weight gain and nappy output though.

It is a lip tie. My 2 year old was unable to breastfeed because of this and I was a first time mom I only got to find out about liptie after she was one year old. I’m currently pregnant and very aware of how to go about this this time around. That lip tie is now a dentist issue who has also told us to wait it out while my daughter does talk there’s times you can tell she’s struggling with some words because of it.

First, I want to say I am so sorry you’re going through it because I’m finally getting out of the worst of it, and it is not for the faint of heart. There were so many days I wanted to give up. I promise I understand how hard that is! /:
But yes, that’s exactly how my son’s looked! Also, all of the exact symptoms you put, my son had. Never had issues gaining weight either. We are finally getting to a better side of things at 8wks. 😬 He still does have hard days, but there’s more good than bad! Just FYI—the lactation people we went to told me they don’t have lip ties without tongue ties. Our son ended up having lip, tongue, and cheek. Hope that helps!

When my little girl was a baby I always thought she had a shallow latch and I thought she had a lip tie. When she was learning to walk she fell with something in her mouth and snapped it herself. They say that happens quite often, so don’t always do anything about it x
