Hi everyone! I have super bad sickness at the moment and I feel super guilty whoever I have to phone in to work. I’m 9w4d, I have nausea on and off but nothing major however some random days I just can’t keep anything down and it’s like I have food poisoning! Should I feel guilty for staying off on the days where it’s super bad??

Don’t feel guilty! Rest away, also pregnancy related sickness should be recorded differently in a work place to your usual sickness and this should not be used against you. X
unfortunately it is, if you have more then 5 days off you have to work your day off which is hard when struggling as it is!

Would double check your options and where you stand at work and with being pregnant, things may be different! I was like this with my little girl at work but luckly enough could control it. Definitely double check worth the ask x

Regular rules for sickness management cannot legally apply to pregnant women, it counts as discrimination. You’re entitled to whatever time you need without any consequences. Hopefully the below gives you some extra information:

I had HG in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy and I didn’t have a very understanding workplace but I had a lot of time off. Youre creating a life so don’t feel guilty for taking as much time as you need.
I spent 2 days in hospital on a drip as I couldn’t keep anything down it’s bloody hard work!

I worked in McDonald’s when I was pregnant with my first and every single smell set me off, I was almost permanently on tills because I couldn’t walk properly due to PGP, they let me sit down on a chair between customers and I couldn’t work in the kitchens because the grease smell was appalling 😂 I could just about work on drinks sometimes but you have to be really fast paced when it’s busy so it was a real struggle some days but any time I called in sick they were great and the whole crew and management always checked up on me and ensured I was safe and comfortable at work, I ended up having to go off sick from about 18 weeks due to PGP and sickness but your employer definitely should be treating pregnancy related sickness differently to normal sickness

Don’t fell guilty at all. And it will get better. I am 11 weeks and finally feeling better. I am taking nausea medication prescribed by an obstetrician to help. Call pregnancy sickness support, a non profit that supports pregnant women with nausea, and they will guide you through it.
Hope you get better soon.

No need to feel guilty at all, you are growing an actual life inside you and employment law means that you and your pregnancy related absences are protected. You take as much time as you need related to your pregnancy go ensure your baby grows healthy and you're as well as you can be
this girl who I know keeps telling me that the more sickness I have off it will come out of my mat leave, is this true?

It’s not true but there’s a caveat. It can impact the amount you receive if you’re off sick during the qualifying period for maternity leave. This is the 15th week before your due date. You can confirm with your employer which dates exactly are considered qualifying for you, and either work during that week or book annual leave so your pay stays the same and therefore maternity isn’t affected.
thank you! I’m just struggling with this girl who has never been pregnant telling me what I can and can’t do!

@Aggs it's the two pay periods prior to your qualifying week, e.g I'm due on 2nd October, my qualifying week was 19th June, so the pay reference periods were the two pay periods prior which are April and May. If your pay is reduced in these periods so will your maternity pay. Unless you receive full company sick pay.

thank you!

My advice would be to get a fit note from your doctor that states due to extreme pregnancy sickness you will require sporadic time off work to rest and recover from the sickness
