Shared parental leave

Hi, is anyone a teacher on here who has taken shared parental leave and could give me more info on how it works/how you apply?

I have. Not sure I can provide too much info (it is very confusing) but happy for you to message :)

I have and I’m happy to help - DM me. I’ve worked mine so I can get 10 extra weeks on full pay.

I have-I used the shared parental leave for teachers company! It was £65 but they completed all the forms for me and even sent me a cover email to send I’m to HR! I’ve gained 6 weeks extra pay spread over 10months which will help :) first thing you’d need to do is ask your school for their shared parental leave policy and in there should be some forms to complete. Then you go from there :) happy to chat further if you’d like! Xxx

I’ve done it! If you’re not sure, this website has lots of information and can support you with forms too if your think your school will be difficult about it. If you qualify, the school cannot refuse it https://www.teachersspl.co.uk/how-it-works

Or if you want, I can explain on this thread? The main info I need is when did you go on mat leave, when do you plan on returning and does your partner plan to use any of the SPL or just you? (Just you is easier.) Also does your school do any sort if enhanced mat pay for you?

@Emily I went on mat leave end of November, plan on returning end of November this year. My partner can’t have SPL as he is self employed. Need to check with school x

Ok so what you want to do is: End of maternity leave: last day of this half term Working on full pay: May half term holiday week SPL1: final half term of this academic year Working on full pay: all of summer holiday weeks SPL2: all of half-term1 dates Working on full pay: oct half term holiday week SPL3:after oct HT to date of return in Nov You will have to apply quickly if you want to be paid for the May half term week. They will therefore pay you for an extra 8 weeks on full pay, for those 3 holidays and can’t ask you to do any work during that time that they dont expect all teachers to do. So for example they could ask you to come in for results day in August if that’s something they expect of all teachers, but otherwise you’ll get paid for those holidays just like any other teacher does.

Thank you so much ☺️

If you’ve left it too late to apply for the SPL to start after May half term, this is your second best option: End of maternity leave: last day of term for this a academic year Working on full pay: all of summer holiday weeks SPL1: all of half-term 1 dates from September Working on full pay: oct half term holiday week SPL2:after oct HT to date of return in Nov

All SPL weeks are paid same as statutory maternity pay

This website will help, or DM me and we can always talk on the phone quickly if needed xx

@Emily my baby (and sleep deprived) brain is completely frazzled and I can’t work out what I need to do… my first day of mat leave was 4th Dec and I’m hoping to go back in Dec but not 100% sure yet - what would I need to do? Xx

First of all, don’t panic ☺️ Have a quick read of the link I posted above, email your HR dept or line manager and ask them to send you their maternity policy and shared parental leave policy. If they don’t have an SPL policy, the government website has forms that can be used by any employer and employee, and they have to be accepted as you have a legal right to request SPL. The main questions to ask your employer are: When do you have to give notice of ending your Mat leave earlier than first agreed? When do you have to send in your SPL request? (It’ll be something like “X weeks before you want to start your first period of SPL” You are allowed to take 3 periods of SPL, so you’ll ideally want to take them during May half term break, the summer holiday and the October half term break, so you’ll get paid full salary for those 8 weeks. If you’re too slow to get in before the May half term break, you should still be able to apply for 2 periods of SPL and get summer pay

I don’t mind if you want to DM me and we can talk through any other questions you have

I’m a vice principal and did a lot of supporting staff with HR issues and the HR team with policies etc, so I HOPE that means I have understood this all properly and can help 😅 At least, my SPL request was accepted.
