Child benefit after redundancy

I was about to apply for child benefit (first time mom, baby is 2 months old) and when I started reading about eligibility it confused me. I was made redundant towards the end of my pregnancy, so technically I am unemployed. Does that mean I am not eligible? How does that make sense, surely I need it even more? I've always worked up till now so don't claim anything else. Is there something else I should apply for if not eligible for this (I am receiving SMP). And if not eligible, should my partner apply for it instead, he's employed. Thanks in advance for all advice 🙏

Everyone gets child benefit unless you earn over £100k, do you mean universal credit that is dependent on wages etc.

I’m currently adding my second baby to my child benefits claim, everyone is entitled to it unless obviously you earn a ridiculous amount! I’ve been told to ring hmrc to add him to the claim however I cannot for the life of me get through to them🙈 they can back date up to 3 months pay and my baby is also nearly 2 months so I’m hoping to get through🤦🏼‍♀️xx

If you are on UC you can apply for maternity grant which is £500. Which goes up to six Months (I do believe) ask your midwife about it. but I thought everyone should be able to get child benefits though.

You would be entitled to child benefit working or not. Depending on your partners income you may also be entitled to universal credit. There are lots of calculators online to check this before you put in a claim. It can take around 5/6 weeks before you get your first payment for universal credit so put your claim in sooner rather than later. And look into the maternity grant and sure start vouchers too.

@Nikki it's if you or your partner earn over 80k not 100k. Over 60k, some of it will need to be paid back
