My five almost 6 months old is only drinking 1 ounce of milk. She drinks 6 ounces in the middle of the night and then moving forward, she takes 1 ounce or 3 ounces every two hours. Really worried I don’t know why she’s doing this. Maybe I should just wait for her to be hungry, but she cries so much until I gave her the ounce
IfSomeone else has gone through this. What can I do? SOS

Has she always done that? Or is it new?

she drinks 4 ounces and then decreases and at night drinks a lot idk how to control it but recently is less

Maybe she’s teething or going thru a leap and that’s making her want less?

How much should a 5 month old be drinking?

I think this is considered reverse cycling.
Here is an article from Taking Cara Babies about Reverse Cycling:

Mine too girl. She’s almost 6 months

it depends. Is she drinking breast milk or formula?

If she’s breastfed, it’s normal to drink 3oz. Some babies never go above it. As long as she’s gaining weight, having pee/poo diapers, and happy. I wouldn’t worry about it.

she is exclusively formula fed

oh okay I believe it’s 24-32 oz a day.

if she’s eating that amount every two hours or so. Then that’s fine from what I’ve heard. I breastfeed but my niece was formula fed. If she was eating that every four hours, then that would be a different story.

This response is going to be long but I hope it helps because my 5 (almost 6) month has been going thru this same thing and I THINK we may be getting past it.
Mine was drinking 1-2 oz at a time as well and very finnicky. She is exclusively on formula ( was similac alimentum).
On Thursday, I switched her formula to Kendamil and she is consistently drinking 4 oz now at a time. Yesterday was our first time she drank 32 oz in the day!! My goal is to see if I can get her to drink 6 oz at a time so that we can cut down on how frequently she feeds.
Here are some things I tried before deciding to switch formulas - because switching formulas seemed scary to me in case that didnt sit well with her - adding to this problem.
1. Try feeding baby in dark room without distractions.
2. Check your bottle's nipple size to ensure the flow is correct for their age.
3. Try switching up milk temperature - maybe baby likes colder or warmer milk.

4. Try a different bottle...guess babies are picky with nipples / bottles.
5. Try to assess if baby is uncomfortable or in pain when feeding. I read that sometimes drinking milk hurts or uncomfortable if they (1) are teething (2) have ear infection (3) prob with tongue (4) problem with breathing thru nose - if stuffy.
These are some things I ruled out before changing formulas so I hope it helps. Its alot so I apologize but this issue has been giving me anxiety - because my LO was drinking most her milk at night at nothing during day!
