My baby is 5 weeks old and we were using Mam bottles with size 0 teats. He seemed to be drinking extremely slow (sometimes taking 30 mins - 1 hour to drink) and would often fall asleep during feeds. I heard that this was a sign to size up teats. I tested him on size 1 and size 2 teats but with both it seems like the flow is too fast for him. It spills out of his mouth and he coughs on it.
He's recently started with colic symptoms and it seems to be getting progressively worse (I've just bought some infacol) but I read that having a teat that's too slow can give them gas as they suck it too fast. But also a teat that's too fast gives them gas as they can't keep up with the flow - seems like it's a lose/lose situation?! Feel like I'm at a loss? Do I go back to the size 0 even though he feeds so slow on it?
I've also just got 2 Tommee Tippee bottles to try him on those incase it makes any difference.. they come with size 1 teat which we're going to try but I was also wondering if the variflow are any good? Supposed to adjust to the babies suction/pace but I've heard mixed reviews. Open to trying anything at this stage tbh I hate seeing him struggle and the painful cries😩

My baby was on reflux milk so was on size 2 teats as it really thick anyway he was moved back to normal milk so I moved down to size one at Frist he did the same but I just sat him up bit more and was winding him every half oz it took him few days get use to as it was change in flow but he’s fine on them now he is also 5 weeks now and then when he super hungry he try guzzling it I Just take it of him give him min catch his breath and try a again he tend to Just drink it normal then you could also try takeing a knife and makeing the size 0 a little bit bigger but not as big as the 1

I had the same problem with my 5 week old. Was using size 0 teats and he was getting frustrated as the flow wasn't fast enough, it was taking him ages to finish a bottle. Switched to size 1 teats and he was coughing and spitting up (I thought he was choking, really scared me). He did this a few times so I panicked and went back to the 0 teats. And he was struggling again. Went back to size 1 teats and just sat him up and didn't let the teat completely fill with milk so he had control of the flow and he's gotten used to them now and doesn't cough up and finishes his bottles.
I think it's a matter of them getting used to it. Maybe sit him up a bit so he has control and don't tip the bottle completely. Hope this helps x
