How to deal with 2 year old behavior in public

My 2 year old behaves when it’s only me or her dad but when I’m on the phone or we go out in public SHE DOES NOT LISTEN. I feel like she’s testing me. For example we were at the store in checkout line and she wanted candy and I said no, I gave her a toy instead. She had a tantrum. There was another toddler behind us and the mom was looking in a judgmental way. I hate public tantrums because ppl judge so much. It’s worse when it comes from another parent. Also when I’m on the phone she acts up, she will snatch the phone away and won’t give it back. I ask her nicely but that never works. The only time she listens is if I raise my voice or spank her and I don’t want to do that. Please tell me your suggestions!

My daughter never LISTENS!!! -and for her own good she should, but she’s in her own world. I’ve learned screw the judgement. Just get down to her level and sit with her until the tantrum is over. Show her that you are there. Try not to figure it out at that moment. Tickle her or try and make her laugh.
I get very annoyed with my daughter in public too it’s embarrassing like why aren’t you listening.
But getting down to her level and or distracting her with laughing if done sort always helps.

😂 😂😂😭 I have to laugh because I’m facing the EXACT same issue 😂 I REFUSE to go out in public with my 2 year old. If it’s not a kid centered space or event, I don’t take him. I have ZERO control over his actions in public so I opt out 😂
Don’t stress too much, they’re all like that. They have no emotional regulation so until you teach it to them, you have to fight for your life 😂 it’s gets better (I hope)

I’m in the same boat as you! My toddler had a tantrum during a preschool meet and greet event and everyone was looking at us. I just decided to leave at the time because she wouldn’t calm down. I think you just have to forget everyone around you and take your time to calm them down.

it feels good to know I’m not alone!

honestly I feel like I never what to go out with her again but I’ve heard it’s better to take them out more. I had a baby 5 months ago and rarely took her out, so I don’t think she knows how to act

its hard when you see other toddlers listening and your child isn’t, and other parents judging!

I joke to people to make my anxiety not go through the roof “she don’t listen” but I have learned in these experiences, (which is hard) is to not show her you’re frustrated or annoyed. I just pick her up or if she is throwing a fit on the ground lay her down slowly and kindly ask her do you feel better. Sometimes I lock her and she thinks that’s funny, so then I ask her are you done then I bribe her! Bribery is clutch in my family. Not all the time but more of a reward for working through an emotion that was hard to get into words.
But I’ve really found making her laugh is key!

I'm the type of parent that I will discipline if you're misbehaving in stores. I'm not going to leave my stuff and walk out to the parking lot and sit in the car while you cry and then when you're done, we go back in, no I'm not doing that

I have a 4 month old daughter. If we're leaving the store then I'm not going back in. I smack my son's hand or spank his butt, but not like abuse but just to get him to understand that's not okay.

Monday mornings, Celia Kibbler hosts a pod here on peanut with sound parenting advice from a professional for FREE ❤️ She's great! Also, keep in mind, your child is doing the best that they know how. They have a need that they're trying to express, whither that's physical or emotional, they aren't trying to be bad, they're doing the best they can with what they've got for now.

I just want to say I experience this with my son everytime we go somewhere especially if it’s me and him. It’s embarrassing at times but I smile through and ignore the looks. Sometimes I can redirect him but that’s only a small percentage. He will be 3 in March 2025 and I’m praying as he gets older this will pass. He is also extra clingy because I’m pregnant so it’s hard on me. I have no real advice but I want to thank you for sharing because as smart and intelligent he is taking him anywhere gives me anxiety and it’s like it’s always him in a crowd and other parents look like they never experienced that. Which I know.it’s not true. I love on him and okay with him for distraction while keeping me grounded and be stern with whatever I’m telling him we can’t have at that moment

My number one piece of advice. Mean what you say.

How you react to their reaction causes their reaction practicing calming yourself down in front of them doing breathing exercises allows them to see emotional regulation and practice it my toddler starts doing it and if he sees I'm overwhelmed he comes and tells me to breath and relax it takes time to help them learn and it won't be an over night fix but over time with practice and patience and love it does work I promise you
