Midwife has said baby is 4/5 engaged today at a checkup.
I assumed 5/5 was the most engaged baby can be but just read up that it works the other way with 5/5 being the least and 0/5 being the most 😅 have I read this correctly?

Yes, it’s the other way round to what you would think. So you still have 4/5ths of the way to go 😅

how I’ve gone so long thinking it was the other way 😂 logically in my brain 5/5 felt like the most but so be it… engaged is engaged at this point and I’m ok with that haha

If you are 4/5 engaged, they are very low down, but if you are 4/5 palpable, it’s the opposite - it should say which in your notes, mine have always said ‘x/5 palp’

definitely counter intuitive isn’t it

my notes online just say engagement 4/5 but no other information other than what side baby is on etc

How do they know the engagement? Xx

mine puts her thumb and forefinger below my bump and gives it a little wiggle to feel the baby’s head I think 😂 unless that’s for another reason 🤷♀️

ohh never had that been done to me! At what week did she start doing it? Xx

I’d say from my 28-32 week appointment, usually when she’s checking baby’s position for the Doppler

oh no 🙈 how confusing

My notes from my midwife appointment today say mines is 3/5 engaged! Still confused what that means just glad he’s engaged at all 🤣

that’s identical to mine… either way it feels like the baby could drop out at any moment with the pressure and discomfort 😂 sadly it’s not that easy

@that’s literally what I say 🤣 I do hope that means it’ll be soon! I’m booked in for induction on 2nd September so trying to do everything to start labour before that 😬

fingers crossed 🤞

mine was showing the same last week and I'm going to be 33weeks this Saturday

So I think it’s because that’s how much of the head they can still feel, when they are fully engaged (0/5) they can feel 0% of the head as it’s all in the pelvis.
When they are partially engaged (4/5) they can still feel 4 5ths of the head if that makes sense.
I was 0/5 engaged but because she’s my second it’s easier for them to bob in and out so she’s now 4/5.
They may not engage fully until labour starts
