It would take me a minute, especially if the child wasn't in front of me because I know a lot of girls name Eli (as the girl Ellie), either as their name or nick name.

After I knew it was a boy I'd understand E-lye as a pronunciation. But you may have to initially tell people sometimes, especially if they are in a hurry with the name.

Personally, I'd stick with Eli as there will be minimal pronunciation issues, and he won't have to spell it for everyone either.

I think it's hard when you want a name to be different like that because people don't know if you mean just the spelling or the pronunciation too. You kind of need a full-proof alternative spelling that is impossible to pronounce any other way, and that's hard.

I would have said eel-lee or Ellie.
