Our 4.5 month old has been on omeprazole for just over 3 weeks now and has been suffering from horrendous trapped wind overnight. He’s waking on average every 1.5 hours and screams in pain after a few mins of trying to fart, the only thing that settles him is feeding again. Tonight he isn’t passing gas but just scrunching his legs so now I’m wondering if it’s the reflux making him uncomfortable rather than the gas. It’s definitely worse if I try to put him to sleep on his back, but even on his side isn’t much better.
I’m now thinking his dose isn’t correct, am I right in thinking so even if I’m only experiencing these issues at night? He doesn’t have any trapped wind issues during the day however he does contact nap for every nap.
If his dose was increased does anyone know if the gas is also likely to improve overnight or could it get even worse?
He was a happy spitter before this and while he wouldn’t like to sleep on his back we had none of these gas issues. The only reason he’s on omeprazole is because he choked on his reflux a few weeks ago so it’s hard to see him in pain suddenly from it (even though it’s preferred to him choking).

Any medication that helps with reflux usually has trapped wind side effects. Basically reflux medication stop or reduces anything from coming back up their throats including gas. I'm pretty sure Omeprazole tightens the sphincter at the top of the stomach to reduce what comes bk up and unfortunately this usually includes wind. Omeprazole can be a bit more aggressive on there tummies which is why it is usually and should be prescribed as a second course of action after and if infant gaviscon doesn't do the job. However infant gaviscon comes with its own set of side effects such as trapped wind but just not as bad. We were advised to you infacol along side reflux medication to help ease this. You do need to use it for 3-7 days consistently before it has its desired effect it won't fix ur baby straight away but this has helped my baby a ton xx

Alternatively assuming you haven't already tried it you can ask gp for a milk thickner if you are formula feeding called carobel which Basically just makes the formula heavy so it's harder for them to spit the formula back up. It might be the laying down flat and being settled for a bit that is causing all the gas to gather and cause them more pain. You can also try to prop one end of whatever you have them sleeping him so it's on a little bit of a slant. Only do this propping up the actual frame of the thing not the mattress or using pillows or anything. Having them on a slant should make it harder for reflux to travel up as well as using gravity to encourage the gas to go down. Have his head end on the slightly increased height end xx

I could have written this exact post - we started omeprazole after a choking incident and are having the same issue with trapped wind and him waking up screaming several times throughout the night, unable to pass the wind on his own and totally inconsolable- something we had never experienced before and he is 4.5 months.
We spoke to a paediatrician who suggested we try Lansoprazole instead of Omeprazole as different babies react differently to each medicine. It’s early days (only started on weds), but the volume of gas does seem to be less. It’s a smaller dose and easier to dissolve too. I was previously told by the doctor to increase the dosage of omeprazole to help with his reflux but did find that the gas increased.
We’ve also been taking him to an osteopath who said his tummy was really tight and inflamed (from suspected dairy intolerance) so she has released the tension which I think helps the gas flow more freely through too.
Another suggestion was to try Colief.

Also, I could be wrong but my understanding of omeprazole is that it helps with the pain of the acid reflux but doesn’t help to reduce sickness - it didn’t make any difference to his sickness in the 8 weeks we were on it, but defo made him less uncomfortable. The only thing that helped with sickness is when I cut dairy from my diet and took him off dairy formula x

Try tummy massage for wind. Lots of videos on YouTube. Did help us a bit. 🤏 plus probiotics

My girl is 5 months and on omeprazole and suffers with trapped wind still! We find the best thing is to get her moving. We spent so much time with her ‘upright’ because of the reflux, so she wasn’t having as much time to wriggle, change positions etc. Once we started prioritising floor time and tummy time, she was finding it so much easier to bring her wind up. After every nap we do bicycle kicks and press her legs in to help her pass it from the other end. The more relaxed their body is, the easier it is for them to pass it. We also found seeing an osteopath helped tremendously as she was so so tense for the first 3 months, and this helped her to relax her body x

useful to know thanks! Tried the cot propped up and unfortunately didn’t help but I maybe didn’t try high enough. Also breastfeeding which makes some options not so easy (he refuses a bottle too)

sucks doesn’t it!
Hope the lansoprazole helps for you, I’ll discuss that option with the doctor. Do you have to go through the acid battle again when you switch? Useful to know that increasing the dose just made it worse, it’s a bit of a minefield knowing what to do!
Yeah we’ve also been to an osteopath and she’s done all she says she can after 4 sessions.
Yes our son is definitely less uncomfortable with the acid during the day just really frustrating that the horrendous gas at night is the compromise. How long did you cut dairy for? I’ve tried that a couple of times but maybe not for long enough. Taking a food diary now though too just incase.

yeah we do all sorts of things during the day to help him pass it but he doesn’t have any issues at all during the day. He actually isn’t even very gassy in the daytime. It’s when he’s still on his back at night that it really starts to hurt him and even massages and bicycles etc don’t work overnight. The amount of gas that builds up is insane. As soon as he wakes up in the morning properly it stops bothering him as well.

haven’t experienced any acid battle, was just a straight swap and he still does seem to be a lot less gassy so really hoping that it’s worked 🤞I’ve cut dairy for 1.5 months but noticed the difference after a couple of weeks with him being sick a lot less. May be worth cutting soy too - I’ve cut that for 3 weeks but not sure it’s made a difference. Another suggestion I had was to cut foods that made me gassy - broccoli, garlic, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, beans etc so you could try that to see if it makes a difference at all. It feels so restrictive but honestly it’s got so bad I was willing to try anything.
