16-week midwife appointment - heartbeat

I had my appointment this week, and was expecting to hear the baby’s heartbeat then, but the appointment involved sorting out things my first midwife forgot to do (e.g.: book a test to check for gestational diabetes because of PCOS, give me my NHS exemption certificate, get a test for my blood type). I was wondering if they should’ve checked the baby’s heart beat. How did your 16-week appointment go?

Mine didn’t do it automatically, I asked about it and she said they don’t do it anymore, but she did once I asked. I think it depends on your trust but it appears more common that they don’t listen for it x

I had mine this week and they said they don't do it at the 16week appointment as it can still be hard to detect with a dopler. Think they start doing it from the next midwife appointment.

I had mine at 16 weeks, they listened to the heartbeat. But each trust has different guidelines so others' experience might not really be relevant.

That’s a shame you didn’t get to hear heartbeat and appointment was disorganised. I got to hear my babies heartbeat at 16 week midwife appointment but I think it just depends where your midwives are, in what area etc. My sister is in Scotland and didn’t hear her babies heartbeat until 24 week midwife appointment x

Other than that it was pretty straight forward, asking how I am feeling, blood pressure, Any questions I had ☺️

Avatar

Thank you so much, everyone! Sounds like I don’t have to worry then. ❤️

They don’t actually have to listen to the heartbeat at all anymore as sometimes they struggle to find it and it causes unnecessary stress. Some midwives will if you ask, or if you have an older midwife they’ll be more likely to do it I found!

Hopefully you get to hear it next time 😊

Every trust is different but quite often the heartbeat isn’t checked until further on - think my first was at my 28 week appointment - as it can be harder to find prior to this and they don’t want to cause any unnecessary panic.

Avatar

Aw that’s a shame mainly just because it’s nice to hear, my midwife did listen to mine but warned me it could take a little while to find it. Hopefully next time 🤞🏼 x

Some trusts won’t listen to the heartbeat at 16 weeks anymore, I first heard it at my 20 week scan. Apparently they stopped routinely doing it at 16 weeks as it was causing a lot of unnecessary stress and worry with it being more difficult to find that early

Avatar

My midwife told me that they routinely check the heartbeat at the 22 week appointment, so nothing to worry about. I'm in Scotland x

I wasn’t expecting to hear the heartbeat at 16 weeks appointment but i got lucky to, and every time there was an interference she told me thats baby moving, which was a lot.
Like a lot of people have said it depends on where you are and maybe on the midwife too.

Avatar

My appointment didn’t involve hearing the heartbeat that starts for me at the next appointment which is 20 something weeks not sure how many exactly without checking but it’s after my 20 week scan. So it may just vary ☺️

Avatar

This is my second so I’ve only had my booking appointment and 12 wk scan where I heard the heartbeat. You skip the 16 wk appointment with your second but my midwife said they do it at my 20 wk appointment. Booked in for a private scan tomorrow. It’s such a long wait.

Avatar

My midwife does listen to the heartbeat but not until about 24 weeks!

Avatar

My midwife checked mine at my 16 week check up maybe it’s certain hospital/areas that do stuff differently? X

Avatar

Mine didn’t either so I decided to buy a doppler from Amazon.. best money I’ve spent so far as I get to listen whenever I like! Warning though - you’ll pick up your own heartbeat for a while (so many arteries around there) but eventually you’ll pick up a 150jsh bmp and it’s completely magical ♥️

Avatar

My 16 week appointment so useless and disappointing , they just took the blood pressure and nothing else.. 5 minutes in and out

Avatar

Exactly the same as . I thought it was such a waste of time and energy

Avatar

did they not even check your urine?? 😳

Avatar

@Bruna no they didn't 🙄

Avatar

nope nothing just blood pressure and sent me home

Avatar

it does sound like care is not standardised and varies by location, sadly. I guess you would know if you had an UTI, but maybe just ask them to check it for you next time you’re in. They can test it in a matter of seconds in front of you, so it’s very easy for them!

Avatar

Mine I asked for her to check for the heat beat. She said they normally don’t do it but I said I wanted to hear it just as I’ve had the odd other issue (all good though!)

Avatar

mine was the same and didn’t even do My blood pressure as the machine didn’t work 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just came out of my appointment (even though I am 19 weeks, it got delayed because I was away when I had my initial one and the next available appointment was 2 weeks later 🙄)

They collected my urine, took my blood pressure, listened for the heartbeat answered questions and also booked all my remaining appointments.
I also asked about the glucose test (my mom had gestational diabetes when pregnant with me so I got tested the first time around when I was pregnant so I knew to ask for it) and got that booked in for 26 weeks.

I also asked and got my whooping cough vaccine and flu vaccine

Pregnancy after c section

What time scale did everyone get pregnant again after a c section?
I know the doc said they recommend eating at least a year to 18 months but it took 4 years to get pregnant the first time after being told we could not conceive naturally so not wanting to stop it happening knowing it could take a very long time again but also worried.

Braxton hicks

I’m currently 34 weeks and have been experiencing braxton hicks for the past few weeks however have been having cramps almost like very strong period cramps In my lower stomach. I’ve mentioned this to my midwife and she only really asked if I’d been keeping hydrated and taking my vitamins which I am but didn’t really proceed to tell me if this was normal or related to braxton hicks also, has anyone else experienced this?

Little girl turning herself sideways in next to me

My little girl tonight, has spun herself so she is lying sideways in her next to me, making me panic!

Labour??

I’ve had on/off mild period cramps since 9 last night, very irregular and very mild, but I just had one that woke me up. My waters haven’t gone and nor has my mucous plug… but could this be a sign that it’s close?! I’m 40+3 and desperate to meet her!
