NHS appointments with midwife’s

I had my 20 weeks scan and have few midwife appointments where they measure the belly old school with measurement tape and listen to the heartbeat through like a Doppler not even proper scan - but I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and they don’t see the scan of the baby. Am I suppose to book something private to check something else ? I mean my pregnancy is low risk but I still don’t trust nhs as if they are doing everything I need to do. How do you know what checks you suppose to have ?

I know have 3 more appointments booked with midwife until birth date but that’s it.

they have taken blood 2 times throughout pregnancy and one diabetes test. Scan at 12 weeks and scan at 20 weeks and that’s it. Is that normal what everyone else is having ?
I just want to know shall I book something else myself privately to ensure baby is okay etc ? How do people find out they have low iron, or this % that everyone is talking about where the baby is measuring small or big - I have no clue where you get all this information and if I am missing something

You would have extra scans and tests if your baby would be measuring too small/too big, or anything would be of concern regarding your blood tests, urine samples (protein) or anything else. If there are no tests that means there are no abnormalities. The percentiles, estimated weight and blood test readings can be found in your paper notes (yellow folder?) or Badger app if your NHS trust is not doing paper notes.

That's pretty normal. See here: https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/your-antenatal-appointments/
I was very surprised, when I was pregnant with my first, how little care pregnant women in England get...

So if your a low risk pregnancy you only get 2 scans with the NHS 12&20 weeks. I’m a high risk pregnancy so they add growth scans 28,32&36. I had my 32 week midwife appointment today where they took my blood and checked my iron levels. If your worried I would book a private scan however I know they are quite expensive x

Thank you 🙏

I am a high-risk pregnancy and I wasn't satisfied with the lack of information provided during my two NHS scans. I felt that I didn't receive enough details, so after each scan, I decided to have private scans for more thorough information.

Im high risk pregnancy due to BP and Gestational diabetes, i’m having scans every 3 weeks to check my placenta and baby’s growth. Xx

I am low risk and have had the same as you, just 12 and 20 week scans. I am 32 weeks now and have a midwife appointment every 2 weeks up to my due date but nothing more than belly measurement and listening to heartbeat. If there are any concerns with growth they would send you for scans but if everything is ok and you don’t have any concerns they don’t do more than is needed :)

I was low risk till 28 weeks and it’s reassuring that they don’t see you anymore if all tests are ok. But, please be even more reassured that if even the smallest test comes back with a ‘not normal’ result they will do so much. I’m now 32 weeks, have already had x2 extra scans and am seen at the hospital at least x3 weekly because of what I’ve got going on. They will do more if they need to.

I’m high risk, due a scan at 32 weeks & then 36. The lack of information I’ve been given is absolutely terrible too.
If you’re going to private scan I highly recommend window to the womb, it’s not over priced for what you get and they thoroughly check over baby x

That’s normal unless you have a risk pregnancy

Also be morally prepared when you’ll have your baby, you will be sent home in 24hrs or maybe even sooner. Not after a week! Good luck 💙💛

Thank you so much! 😊

haha this! I was so surprised when I was sent home after less than 24h after a c-section! But frankly, the maternity ward was so bad I was glad I didn't have to stay any longer!

Small head reported following 20 week scan

Has anyone else had it flagged that their baby is in the bottom 5th percentile for head size?

They said everything was fine whilst we were in the scan and then I got a phone call the next day saying that it’s on the small side and we’re being referred to a paediatric specialist at St George’s. Has anyone else had this and how did things go??

Would you bring 9 week old to a family party of 35+ people?

These are also people who will want to pass the baby around and get a turn to hold him. He just got his 2 month shots two days ago

Exercise 6 weeks after c section

What movement did people start to introduce? I won’t do anything too vigorous until I’ve seen the pelvic physio as I don’t want to compromise anything that may have been extremely weakened through pregnancy! But just wondering what types of classes/movement people started off with?

Induction experience

I just wanted to share my experience with being induced as I wasn’t sure what to expect and thought it may help others.

I opted for the foley balloon which was inserted at 8am Saturday morning, I had to stay in hospital due to hypertension and protein urine however usually you can just go home once this has been done. The insertion of the balloon was not painful, was slightly uncomfortable as there was slight pressure. I actually found having the cervix checked prior to be worse (again not painful at this point just uncomfortable) The balloon had little effect and after having it removed I was still only 1cm. Removal also was pain free and hardly even noticeable.

I then had my first dose of the gel and definitely noticed a difference, I started experiencing period like cramps almost immediately however they were light and manageable. After 6 hours I had another cervix check and although my cervix was soft it was still only 1cm and was only open at the front. I had another dose of the gel and felt an increase in pressure and more intense cramping where I now required pain relief (codeine). After another 6 hours I had another cervix check and I had now dilated to 2-3cm however was still quite difficult to get all the way through so a third gel was recommended which I agreed to.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and was in considerable pain, I had paracetamol and codeine however the contractions had now become intense and a lot closer together (around 3 minutes apart). After a couple of hours I had my last cervix check and was 4cm and taken down to the Labour ward to have my waters broken and an epidural.

I had been in my room for approx 20minutes when my waters broke by themselves and I was now 10cm and actively pushing…. There was no time for the epidural and my beautiful girl arrived into the world within 2 minutes of pushing.

All in all I would say the cramps/contractions were manageable up until the third gel where it became pretty unbearable however it was for a very short time a gas and air helped take the edge off. The worst part about any of it was actually the later cervix checks where after stimulating the cervix my contractions were at their most painful.

If I had to be induced again I would skip the balloon and opt for the gels immediately as thy had a quicker effect and I would have been out a lot sooner if I had done this to begin with.

One more thing, I’ve never believed when people say “you forget the pain once they’re here” but I can honestly say this is true. It’s been 4 days and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
