Sterilisation

I had an emergency c section in May 2022 and an elective January 2025. When having my second they said after that there was a lot of scar tissue and my uterus was really thin, and that if I got pregnant again I’d be high risk of rupturing. I had an internal scan for an unrelated issue this week to which she said how thin it was and again reiterated how dangerous it would be to be pregnant again. Thankfully we have the 2 children we wanted so no more were on the cards, so she said try and push for being sterilised. I am 27, nearly 28, has anyone had similar experience? I have read a few things that say they may fight against because I am under 30, but the way I see it is that it isn’t based on a lifestyle choice at this point. I am going to ring the GP next week to try and discuss, wondering what the chances of them saying yes are

I had my tubes removed during my third C-section in January 2025. I turned 33 in October, but this was my third baby. It just made sense to have it done at the time. Ultimately, it is always your choice. And if you are late 20s with 2 children, its not an unreasonable request. I had no issues fighting for mine.

They do mention risks etc before going ahead with the procedure im assuming? Thats what I was told before I went into theatre for my emergency cesarean x

I’m 24, I discussed this with my consultant as I was consultant led and haven’t long had my second child (2nd cesarean). As long as it’s discussed with a health professional prior to the cesarean and that you know that it’s not reversible on the NHS and you’d have to pay to have it reversed (if you wished to have more children) privately then they can only really advise you. It’s your body but you just need to make sure your 100%

@Kirsty I am considering this myself, did you find the recovery any worse than just the previous sections? I can’t see any terrible long term side effects so it seems like a great route, am I missing anything that might be considered a down side to it?

@Chloe my C-section was 2 hours 🫠 it just took forever! But this was because it was my third and they said there was a lot of scar tissue, having my tubes removed didn't actually take very long, it was an additional 5 or so minutes. I have not found the recovery any different to my previous sections. Make sure you ask for them to remove the entire tube rather than just tie them - it reduces your risk of several cancers in that area, so well worth doing imo! They also sent my tubes off to be checked for any abnormal cells, so it's a bit of peace of mind too. My OH offered to have a vasectomy but after researching it, vasectomies seem to increase chances of prostate cancer, so we opted to do my tubes instead. Don't want to increase the chances of anything! It also makes sense to do it while you're having a C-section, rather than having another procedure or your OH having another one.

@Chloe i also had the coil fitted during my section, obviously not for BC reasons but hopefully they will ease my periods (or stop them all together!) So thats in for 8 years too. Ideal to get it all done together while you are open rather than going back for things later on
