Thank you. Yes we don’t think she is a GLP as it’s started as single words? Do you think it’s helped him in other areas as his communication has developed?
Well, at this point, he is 4.5, started talking single words at 2. Singing at 2.5, reading at 3 (taught himself) and now is reading 5th grade sight words and can mostly communicate, but refuses/can't write, pottytrain, or color
Wow!
We have the toilet training but none of the other stuff! His reading is amazing!
He is diagnosed hyperlexic as well
@Kayla exactly the same as mine! He got recognised as a Gestalt Language Processor at his Autism diagnosis! It was already on my radar! He has had 3 sessions with a speech therapist and he’s improved so much! He can communicate his wants/needs. Tell us what he likes etc but obviously still struggles with free flowing conversation because he’s only picking up those structured phrases! I was petrified about him starting school but his speech has improved so much in the last couple of months! But yeah he can sing, read, write basic things, has an amazing memory! But isn’t fully potty trained, won’t ride a bike etc!
My 3 year old is similar, lots of single words and short phrases. I'm not sure how to help him progress to conversations. Lately we have been working on answering yes or no questions, like I'll say "Do you want this one? yes or no?" And he'll answer yes or no. When he used to say "this one!" So I guess I'm just starting with modeling a multiple choice response that he can repeat.
@Caroline i think practising turn taking in games also helps the turn taking in verbal communication too. Great they’re answering questions. We aren’t there yet! We haven’t got enough verbs and adjectives to build more phrases yet.
That is how my son started, but it was all numbers, letters, and colors. Then his vocabulary exploded, but it was complete sentences used instead of single words, and I eould have to parse a meaning from his sentences. Turns out he is a gestalt language processor. He is getting better at making his own sentences now (that strangers can understand), but when stressed/tired he still reverts to gestalts to communicate
