Baby names that aren’t names

Do you think it’s mean of a parent to name their kid like some of these influencers and celebrities do these days using random words/objects? i.e apple, story, locket and poetry????, Spurgeon?!?!, TRENDY???? Have people forgotten they are naming adults and not just babies?

it’s so dumb. i literally have a note on my phone of names ive seen that are absurd: -stetson -birdwell -elliot for a girl -rockston krew -brynnleigh -cape those have just been names i’ve seen in the past two days. millennials got bored when coming up with names. there’s nothing wrong with naming your kid a name that isn’t made up 🤣

@Emily no I’m begging them to stop, like now someone’s gotta say “hi grandma powerful queen” like be so fucking for real right now

locket and poetry 😭 i think of that one often it always makes me cringe a bit

Totally get this but I've had people give us hate for our boys names saying they aren't real name when they're actually just not English names but Estonian. Object names are a big no for us though

What makes a word a name, it’s just a word!

Simple solution for you: name your kids names you like. It’s not your problem and it’s not impacting you in any way. You are the one bullying. Hopefully you don’t pass that on to your kids.

@Lisa I can’t speak on other languages but in English names should be proper nouns, not common nouns or adjectives.

@Emily Cape!! 🤣

I agree, it’s just plain silly to name a child a word for so many reasons. Not just for bullying but for the child to possibly feel obligated to fit their personality to it too. Or struggling to understand English fundamentals in younger years. However, I do think words are fine as middle names. I think that if parents want to give their children unique first names, they can change up the spelling (in a reasonable way) or use the opposite gender for inspiration.

@Tay agreed especially with the changing spelling in a reasonable way and I love so many reversed gender names!

Gravity, Rumble, Slim, and Whimsy drive me nuts lol I hope some of these celebrities are just using cover-up names online but really named their children normal names. I understand exceptions like Violet, Daisy, Sawyer, and Jack but personally would never use them.

I’ve just seen someone on instagram name their baby boy Pony Ramone Presley

@Claire I love Morgan, I hope his name isn’t actually pony 😭

okay do kids even get bullied for their names anymore? like is that a thing fr? i always see moms on here complaining about it but like.....if your kid is a target, their name won't matter LOL

@destiny 🪬 I think it’s gonna be a lot harder to do with the new generation seeing as a lot of kids have odd/different names, like how is honey rumble gonna make fun of spurgeon for having a weird name? But I do think the teasing will always happen Honestly I’m more concerned about a lot of the names not being adult names that can be used in a serious/professional setting and sounding more like a pet name.

If it’s normal to name your kid Brook or Wolf, how far off is Cape or Pony? We use common nouns as names all the time - all the flower, jewel, and herb names - they are just normal now. No one bars an eye at a Rosemary, Jade, or Daisy.

I like the name Story but I totally agree some names are borderline ridiculous!! But I love the water element name Brooke, River and Ocean. I don't want to hear Heavenly, Peach or Lyric anymore though or car names (still waiting for a Tesla to emerge)

@Anita actually I knew a Tesla growing up she’s 35 now so definitely came before the cars lol

@Claire i saw that. interesting choice to say the least. maybe he’ll go by ramone

@Tay haha the Nara Smith names. i think it is legit, Rumble makes the least amount of sense to me

My daughter has a unique but somewhat normal first name. Her middle name is like an element nature type of name. We call her by her middle name but when she goes to school I figure I will let her pick if she wants to be called her first name or her middle name. I like unique names especially if they have to do with nature but I don't understand names that just don't sound good or have a flow to them at all (like spurgeon)

@Emily "millennials got bored" Meanwhile you have an ongoing list on your phone of names you think are "dumb", dude... there's nothing wrong with people naming their own children, period. This post is honestly so tacky and superficial to me.

@Emily Elliot for a girl is pretty common. I’ve known a few in real life and the main female character on scrubs was named Elliot. I agree with the rest though. There’s a local farming couple just outside of my town, who have a somewhat big social media following, and they named their son Butch. Maybe a new one for your list.

I know 2 adults who have changed their names after being named weird names as kids lol. One was named Brazalyn and she changed her name to Becca lol. And they both went by normal names even when they were teens. So they didn't even use their real name except in forms.

@Evelyn everyone is entitled to their opinion. you can name your kid whatever you want and not everyone has to like it and that’s okay! i just think some names are getting outrageous… but if those parents truly love the name they chose, it shouldn’t matter what others think. what i named my son may not be everyone’s cup of tea and guess what.. that’s okay, because i LOVE his name! it’s not like im directly giving my input to those people… i just think the whole unique name thing is getting a bit crazy, and im allowed to hold my opinion on that.
