The anaesthetist said I need to fast from 6 hours before my procedure. I’ve got to get to hospital for 11am so will be an afternoon section. Should I get up early and have breakfast, say 5am? Or should I just fast from the night before and accept I’ll be hungry? Any advice welcome please

If you're getting to the hospital for 11, realistically you won't be in theatre until at least midday. I'd say you should be fine with a light breakfast at 6am

I had to be at hospital for 11 and was told not to eat after 6am so I set an alarm for 5.30 and had 2 bowls of weetabix 🤣
Baby was born at 13.40

I had to be at hospital for 11am, and the earliest slot was 1:30pm ( I went down second so it wasn't until 3:15 that I went to theatre). The instructions from my hospital was to eat a light breakfast before 7am, and then nothing else other than water could be consumed and that had to stop at 11am.

We had to be in for 11.30 and my section was 1 and they were running late so we didn’t go down until 2, baby born at 2.45!
They told me I couldn’t eat after 6.30 and just have a light breakfast. Eggs on toast or something like that so I had a bacon and eggs sandwich 😂 definitely get something in you even if it means getting up early! Because you may be delayed and that hunger is nasty 😂

thank you for sharing that - it’s my first one so no idea how my body will react!

Just bear in mind the reason they say not to eat is “just incase” they need to put you completely under.
Eating too close to this time if you’re put under causes your muscles to relax and can engage choking.
I would ring the hosp and clarify if you’re concerned what time to stop eating so you and baby are safest.
But yes, I would follow getting up before 5am eating & going back to sleep for a few hours

I was told to come at 11 too and didn’t go down the theatre until 3pm. They forgot to tell me I am allowed to have breakfast as they changed my appointment from 8am to 11 🥲 but once i was there and said i was really hungry and not feeling well they asked why i didn’t have a breakfast in the morning… so eat maybe around 6 ! It’s gonna be a loooong day

I would eat early morning, delays are possible with potential emergency sections as well. I didn’t eat from 8pm the night before and my section wasn’t done until 3pm, was 5pm before I ate anything so went 21 hours without food and felt so sick🥲🤣 good luck!x

Definitely have breakfast… I was in the hospital and was fasted from midnight the night before didn’t end up going down till 2pm and cause I was so dehydrated and hungry it took 45 mins to cannulate me 🙈so deffo get something in you 😅

Eat as early as possible, the reason they want you nil by mouth is to ensure your stomach as empty as possible, to reduce / prevent the risk of aspiration, as sometimes the meds your given throughout the procedure can cause you to feel nauseous. I think 4-5 am is the latest you should eat. Try your hardest to avoid milk. At the time they asked you to take your last pre meds, you can have apple juice or ribenna as they are considered clear fluids and also good source of sugar.

I would say definitely wake up and try and have a little something. I was on the afternoon list so told not to eat after 6am, my section was not until 5pm due to some emergencies so I was very hungry!! I also wasn’t allowed water after midday which in heat wasn’t ideal. Best to try have something if you can xx

I had a bacon butty at 7am before my c section. So glad I did. Went to hosp at 8:30 and went down to theatre at 3:30

I had the same time and I didn't end up down in the theatre until 4pm. But I got up early to eat

I was in at 11am for an afternoon list. My baby wasn't born until 17.13, I hadn't eaten since 5am 🫣 so yeah, wake up early and have something to eat, it could be a long time until you eat again!

Thanks everyone who replied - definitely going to have an early breakfast just in case! Xx

you won’t regret it, just avoid milk if possible. And take apple juice and ribenna with you for after, you will need the sugar boost

I would ask i wasnt to eat from 12pm the night before i was to be there for 7.30 and didnt go down till 12

it depends on the hospital and who gave the pre assessment talk. As long as you haven’t eaten 6 hours prior it’s ok. I sometimes suggest waking up at 1 am and eating.

I was told to not have any thing after midnight. I was scheduled for 8 am.

we were told to come for 11am so not to eat anything from 6 hours before- only sips of water - but even tea with milk/sugar counts as solids so not to have sneaky teas

I was told to go in for 7am but as emergencies cropped up, I didn’t have baby girl until 4:11pm and I’d fasted from the night before! Definitely eat that morning I’d say as I was staaaaaarving x

I was told to be in at 7/8am I think and couldn’t eat after 10pm that night, i demolished everything in sight until then😂 I didn’t get my c section until after 3pm I was literally starving and so was my son he tanked 4oz when he came out 😂😂😂 I was able to eat no problem after the c section. I ate the roast and wanted more and was told no, I was gutted😂😂

Glad I ate at 04:30 - baby arrived at nearly 3pm and then I had a cyst removed too so back onto the ward by 5pm - absolutely starving!
Thanks for the advice ladies! 🧡

congratulations 🎊
