NST testing??

So I'm currently 35 weeks, I live in the us I'm not sure if that matters here. I'm starting to go to the ob every week now. At today's appt the nurse practitioner said "did they give you your NST test prescription yet?" I said no it was never even mentioned to me so it caught me off guard. I asked what it was and they said it's basically just monitoring baby heart rate. They also told me I need to get every week until I give birth..which is a lot considering I already have to drive an hour to get to my ob which is in the same hospital as the NST testing. They said I can try scheduling it for the same day as my ob appt but what if I cant?? I asked why I need it because I never had it with my first. They said it was because of my BMI? so now I'm confused... Because I'm fat my baby needs to be monitored more even though he's been doing fine throughout my whole pregnancy and haven't had any complications?? Also they always check his heart rate at my ob appts so why do I now have to go to a separate office to do the same thing?? Has anyone else had this?? They also said Im at risk for preeclampsia because of my BMI. I also have white coat syndrome so my blood pressure is always a little high at the begining but by the end of the appt they take it again and I'm always fine. I'm sure they are just being careful but I feel like the nst every week is kind of pointless.

What's NST testing?

Avatar

Did not every week starting at 32wks for both my kids. First kid OB was 2 hrs away. Second was 30mins drove. They always did it same day as OB for me.
Mine was because of age (38 for first kid). Husband loved it because you got to listen to the heartbeat for like a half hour. It's heartbeat/rhythm plus contractions to make sure everything is going ok. They check to make sure contractions aren't putting baby at risk and there are no signs of distress. They also check your blood pressure a couple of times so they are making sure you are ok also.

Im currently 37 weeks almost 38, I get NST testing done twice a week and have been since I was 29 weeks. They said it’s basically just extra monitoring to make sure baby is moving and that his heart is doing well. Ive never really further questioned it cause this is my first but no one else in my family or my partners family have had to do NST’s so they all tend to think that the doctors are just being excessive but idk I comply with the testing cause better safe than sorry in my opinion and every baby/pregnancy is different 🤷🏽‍♀️🩵

NST stands for Non Stress Test it monitoring for 20-30 mins to make sure baby is moving and checks to make sure their heart rate matches up with their movement. It also monitors contractions

Preclampsia is no joke. I have hyper tension and didn’t think anything would ever happen to me- but I ended up with severe preclampsia by 35 weeks my first pregnancy and it resulted in my BP shooting up suddenly to 180/122 overnight, immediately being admitted, an emergency c-section and my baby and I almost dying. I took it WAY more seriously my second pregnancy and right now I’m 38 weeks with zero signs of preclampsia but I also took every precaution. It sounds like you are a high risk pregnancy even if it doesn’t feel that way- which means you have to have NSTs done at the end of your pregnancy. I had them with both, and they get scheduled right before every OB visit. I’ve never ever had to come in two separate times for an NST then my OB check in. Hyper tension can affect your baby so the precaution is necessary. And honestly- being forced to rest for 20 minutes for each NST was so great, tbh.

non stress test for baby- monitoring baby’s heart rate over a long enough period of time to detect any drops in heart rate and to monitor baby’s movement as well.

I been going weekly since 30 weeks. I get NST & Ultrasound every visit. Cuz of my blood pressure and they say I have higher risk for preeclampsia because of it

I had a lot of NSTs with both of my pregnancies due to my age. It may seem unnecessary…but they can uncover a problem. I had elevated blood pressure which we caught during one of these tests. I had zero symptoms and felt fine…with high BP. Something very bad could have happened. I’m grateful for it!

I start my NST this week (28 weeks) and have to go twice a week till I give birth. This is my 3rd time doing it. With my first I had to do it because I was a teen pregnancy and had asthma and with my other 2 I had to do it because I have lupus and EDS and it increases my risk of preeclampsia

if there are no complications i think it’s pointless. the one time i went to one they had so much trouble getting the monitors on correctly and ended up getting a false result that only gave me a ton of unnecessary anxiety. i think its most important that you trust your gut on what feels right, if you feel it’s not necessary you don’t have to go

So I was going every week from 30 weeks+ but I also went into preterm labor. I'm 30, slight BMI, but I have also miscarried often prior I have seen high risk visits & regular prenatal frequently through my pregnancy. I've only had 2 or 3 NST so that must be annoying for you. One week I'll do growth scan or prenatal/ high risk/ one was glucose testing and listening to baby etc.

I had to tell my nurses they aren't doing an internal ultrasound because my placenta is blocking my cervix and when I went into preterm labor they did a internal ultrasound... & it made me bleed from 5:20pm to 10:30am following day.. 🦗🤣 like no, maybe we don't do that.. thanks lol. That was almost preterm labor if the bleeding didn't stop. Soooo if you think you are fine, no swelling in your feet or hands, you feel baby actively moving, no complications, I can see how that visit would be dumb lol. I do know they are just doing their job & wanting to see you ever week before L&D now too though like they do with every mama

I had to start getting weekly NST and ultrasounds @ 32 weeks twice a week because i had gestational hypertension. Thankfully my high blood pressure didn’t turn into pre-e this time like it did with my first.

Avatar

If the Doctors recommend NST, I would absolutely do it. Also, you get to hear baby’s heart rate and what mother would not want that…also complications can be identified.

I'm a big mama (high BMI) and I didn't have any NSTs with my first. I had gestational diabetes with the second and had to go weekly for the NST and 3 days later go in again for a BPP every week from 32-delivery. It was annoying to have to go 2x a week, but it was about the safety of me and baby and I only live 10 minutes away from the OB. If I lived farther I would have been really annoyed.

Hello asking in comments here 😄 did anyone deliver because of an NST?? I feel like they make the results fit to what they want to keep with my scheduled csection. So I'm not sure what the point is unless he was literally talking heart rate during a session?

Small head reported following 20 week scan

Has anyone else had it flagged that their baby is in the bottom 5th percentile for head size?

They said everything was fine whilst we were in the scan and then I got a phone call the next day saying that it’s on the small side and we’re being referred to a paediatric specialist at St George’s. Has anyone else had this and how did things go??

Would you bring 9 week old to a family party of 35+ people?

These are also people who will want to pass the baby around and get a turn to hold him. He just got his 2 month shots two days ago

Exercise 6 weeks after c section

What movement did people start to introduce? I won’t do anything too vigorous until I’ve seen the pelvic physio as I don’t want to compromise anything that may have been extremely weakened through pregnancy! But just wondering what types of classes/movement people started off with?

Induction experience

I just wanted to share my experience with being induced as I wasn’t sure what to expect and thought it may help others.

I opted for the foley balloon which was inserted at 8am Saturday morning, I had to stay in hospital due to hypertension and protein urine however usually you can just go home once this has been done. The insertion of the balloon was not painful, was slightly uncomfortable as there was slight pressure. I actually found having the cervix checked prior to be worse (again not painful at this point just uncomfortable) The balloon had little effect and after having it removed I was still only 1cm. Removal also was pain free and hardly even noticeable.

I then had my first dose of the gel and definitely noticed a difference, I started experiencing period like cramps almost immediately however they were light and manageable. After 6 hours I had another cervix check and although my cervix was soft it was still only 1cm and was only open at the front. I had another dose of the gel and felt an increase in pressure and more intense cramping where I now required pain relief (codeine). After another 6 hours I had another cervix check and I had now dilated to 2-3cm however was still quite difficult to get all the way through so a third gel was recommended which I agreed to.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and was in considerable pain, I had paracetamol and codeine however the contractions had now become intense and a lot closer together (around 3 minutes apart). After a couple of hours I had my last cervix check and was 4cm and taken down to the Labour ward to have my waters broken and an epidural.

I had been in my room for approx 20minutes when my waters broke by themselves and I was now 10cm and actively pushing…. There was no time for the epidural and my beautiful girl arrived into the world within 2 minutes of pushing.

All in all I would say the cramps/contractions were manageable up until the third gel where it became pretty unbearable however it was for a very short time a gas and air helped take the edge off. The worst part about any of it was actually the later cervix checks where after stimulating the cervix my contractions were at their most painful.

If I had to be induced again I would skip the balloon and opt for the gels immediately as thy had a quicker effect and I would have been out a lot sooner if I had done this to begin with.

One more thing, I’ve never believed when people say “you forget the pain once they’re here” but I can honestly say this is true. It’s been 4 days and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
