My 5 1/2 year old still doesn’t sleep through the night 😂

One of my kids slept thru at 8 weeks. And the other was over 2 years old. It varies so much. Both were breastfed. My bad sleeper did better when we stopped feeding to sleep at 10 months. We also cut night feeds as she was feeding well during the day and doing great with solids. She went from constant wakes to 1 or 2 a night. It wasn’t perfect…but it was much better than it was. We had a few rough nights as we changed the feeding to sleep and stopping night feeds…but it definitely helped her sleep.

Both of mine started sleeping through consistently at 11 months but both took a tiny bit of training to get there. My top 3 bits of advice are:
- Make sure you’re putting then down awake not asleep (brush teeth after milk to make this happen)
- Cap daytime sleep at 2 hours max
- Have a consistent bedtime and wake time (for us it’s 8pm-7am)
Besides that, make sure not to go in at the first sign of fussiness, wait till they actually escalate. And if all that fails do a bit of ferber

Mine didn’t sleep through until 18m I just waited till he was ready but at 10m it was just once or twice not 5* I don’t blame you for being tired. He usually woke at 1am and 5am for feeds until he was 18m then it was 9pm-5am he’d still have his 5am Bfeed then we’d fall back to sleep till 8-9

Is she in your room or not.

Of course, that's completely normal. My almost 3 year old still doesn't. Some babies sleep through from a young age but they're all different.

My baby didnt sleep thru the night until after 13 months. 10 months is fine mama, some babies need more cuddles and care at night

My 19month old doesn't sleep through. He tends to wake once or twice, although before then he could wake every hour and a half

My first was the same. We ended up cosleeping simply so I didn’t die of exhaustion! Around 2 years, we introduced a hatch light and it was a game changer. We taught her that different colors meant different things (green = get up, orange = nurse, red = stay in bed). The first half of the night, I’d sleep on the couch and my husband would soothe her until she went back to sleep. Then I’d come in to nurse her after longer and longer stretches of sleep. Eventually I was able to sleep in the room the whole night again. We slowly moved the time when she was allowed into our bed to nurse later and later until it was basically morning. Shockingly, once we moved into a bigger place and she had her own room (2.5yrs), she started sleeping through the night without any issue! Looking back, we actually think my husband’s snoring was a big part of the issue! 😅 He has a cpap now so we’re hoping he’s less annoying to baby #2.

18 months old and has only just started sleeping well! My 4 year old didn’t sleep through until nearly 3🤣🙃 x

My first son didn’t sleep through the night til he was 10 months old- usually 2 wakes at the time. But he was bottle fed. Doc said just offer water if he wakes up and eventually don’t offer anything. Kid slept through the night 2 days later and never woke in the night again. He’s now turning 2.

Don’t do sleep training! There are other ways how you can improve it, for example by working on wake windows.
Either way, very normal that they don’t sleep through!

Same here sis 🤣 My daughter wakes up every 2 hours at night, I’m exhausted. I don’t know what to do. I tried sleep training her and she cries 1 to 2 hours non stop. Only breastfeeding makes her sleep. 😔

Wow even letting a baby cry for 2 hours is crazy! So cruel, for baby and me

She was sleep trained before.. after she turned 9 months old she changed. My pediatrician told me to continue training her to sleep on her own.

they don’t have any training on this and often give wrong advice. Independent sleep is not trained like walking. It is the opposite, a good sleeper is not left to cry but feels safe and does it by themselves one day.
Orphanages are silent at night…. Those kids learned too that there is no help

Thank you for the advice but I want to raise my child the way I want to. 😊

it’s not about raising your child a certain way, purposely leaving an infant to cry for 2 hours is abuse

and here they are the pediatricians and CPS workers who give advices in this app.. please mind your own business and get a life (with all the respect)😊

so their advice is that you have to co sleep with your baby until the baby wants to sleep when they want to, probably until the baby is 4-5 years old and forget your own life and forget co sleeping with your husband because now your own life is around your baby. Right! 😊

So as a doctor where was your advice here? You just told me something my doctor told me and I already know. The girl that made this post here was looking for advice, and I commented because I’m looking for advice too, but as a doctor that you are don’t judge other moms what they are going through 😊

I heard you, but don’t tell me to not sleep train my baby, there is a reason why those sleep train methods are out there. Some doctors recommend it some don’t. Some parents use them, some don’t. I don’t practice co sleeping I have my own reasons but I didn’t came here to judge parents who co sleeping, but some moms here judged me for sleep training my daughter when they don’t agree with sleep training. Please be respectful and don’t judge, but I will not be the one to judge or give advice to anyone because I don’t know how to solve this with my own daughter. My daughter slept on her own in her crib, 6 months old and I put her there drowsy and she sleept on her own, and now everyone here is telling me to not sleep train my daughter this young.

That said, I kindly ask that others also respect my choice to sleep train my baby. Sleep training is a method supported by some pediatricians and used by many families, just as others choose co-sleeping or different approaches, and that’s okay. I’m not here to debate or judge anyone’s parenting decisions, and I hope for the same respect in return. We’re all doing our best, and no one knows the full story behind each parent's situation.

would you let her cry for hours on end without attending to her in the day time ?

I work from home so I’m with her 24 hours. I don’t let her cry during day, she mostly only cries at night.

I don’t let her cry at night unattended. I would go to the room, talk to her, massage her, rock her and put her back to sleep again. She doesn’t cry for hours everyday. She would sleep and she wakes up every 2-3 hours at night.

But she is with you and she cries for 1-2h does not sound like a secure attachment nor need based parenting
