Hospital recommendations Wrexham v Glan Clwyd

Hi all,

I live in Buckley so have to choose to give birth in either Wrexham Mealor or Glan Clwyd. Can anyone reccomend/share experiences of either? I really cant find much about either online! Thanks in advance 😊

I've given birth twice at Wrexham and had amazing experiences both times. First time I was induced and I felt really looked after and well informed of what was happening.

I had a terrible time in Wrexham when my LO was born at the end of August. Have raised a formal complaint and waiting for birth trauma support.
I was refused pain relief and kept being told it was too dangerous yet when shift change came the new staff jumped in sorting everything noone could understand why id been told it was too late or dangerous. By this point id been in active labour 8cm dilated for 8 hours and baby had gotten stuck so ended in c section. The post op care was terrible too, staff made me feel like a failure for not being able to express colostrum so kept taking over and pushing formula, one Dr without examining my baby said he had facial nerve damage and would need surgery or botox in order to feed. Hes now 5 weeks EBF and thriving despite everything they tried to scare into us.
My friend just gave birth in the new building in chester countess and said it was fabulous experience.
Despite being north eales you can request any hospital to birth in (including England e.g. Chester, arrowe park)

I’ve had two planned c sections at Wrexham. First still had some covid restrictions so was a little different. I would say the anaesthetist and surgeons were amazing. But the after care I felt they left me alone a little too much and assumed I knew what I was doing, especially with breastfeeding when I had no idea and was doing it all wrong. Also felt like they were trying to get me out but again covid could have been the reason, they felt short staffed. The second time this year was much better they let me stay in longer than was needed and were often checking on me and giving me more support and advice even though it was my second and if anything I needed the support less.

I had my baby in Wrexham in February, Labour and birth were fine and I felt really looked after and cared for (ended up having an unplanned c-section). Unfortunately when I was moved to the ward the after care was poor to the point in that we raised a formal complaint. When I was there the ward was extremely busy, to the point they were cancelling planned c-sections as all bed were full, so this may have been a contributing factor.

I moved from Bolton to north wales nearly two years ago , I have 5 children 4 born in Bolton and then I had my 5th 12 weeks ago at the Glan Clwyd and I had the most amazing experience throughout my pregnancy and delivery . I was booked for my section but ended up with an emergency on the morning and I couldn't have asked for better care they was amazing , Midwives's and Nicu was fantastic. I couldn't fault them Bolton was absolutely awful ! I was admitted a couple of times in my pregnancy for 10 days at one point and the care then was also 10/10 . I was offered Wrexham as well but so glad I chose the Glan Clwyd xx

I had an emergency c section in glan clwyd in 2023 after progressing no further than 9cm after induction.
Had a planned section 9 weeks ago and couldn’t fault the experiences both times.

We used Glan Clwyd in December. I was nervous about a hospital setting but they really put my mind at ease. The birthing suites were calm and relaxed, the pool ready when I arrived even if I didn't quite make it that far 😅. I had a complication post-delivery but they looked after us brilliantly overnight. I'm in CQ and the idea of winding through Wrexham in labour was off-putting where GC is a straight run if that helps!
