So I’m doing the finger prick 4 times a day for 2 weeks. I was told if I get 3 high spikes to call and make a follow up appointment asap as it would mean I have GD. So this happened and i phoned today and have an appointment Monday. But what I can’t understand is how absolutely random the spikes are. One was after a panini and milkshake for lunch, one was after fish fingers and potato alphabet letters and the final one I had today was after a bowl of shreddies. Now I can imagine these things can cause spikes however what I don’t understand is how I can eat Nando’s, McDonald’s, chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks, weetabix with literal sugar on, other cereals, granola honey and fruits… basically endlessly bad things and none of that spike me?! Safe to say I am confused and not entirely convinced by this testing🤣

Oooo. The diabetes spikes are a can of worms. To understand it better you need a diary and a continuous monitor.
Things that affect blood sugar spikes
Stress, timing, order you eat foods, hormones, hydration, time of day, activity levels before and after, how fast you eat and many other individual factors.
I had GD so I used Stelo CGM from Dexcom. I did use insulin, but it helped immensely to monitor and help me with decisions to keep it low and nice and have a healthy baby with a good blood sugar.

Oh… some people get spikes or elevated blood sugar without eating at all. So… it is not easy to figure out
However, don’t worry too much. Follow your doctors advice and you and the baby will be fine

I had GD and it’s the carbs that caused the spikes for me but I could have a small chocolate bar and be fine.. also could eat a domino’s pizza and totally normal. It’s such a wild ride!

I have GD and find it really confusing what spikes my blood sugar and what doesn’t as some things make sense but others really don’t like you say! I think different food works for different people and, like Katie says, you can get spikes without eating too. My biggest challenge is controlling my fasting levels which is hard as they’re a little less in my control.
