Is anyone else’s 1 year old still not using cutlery? No matter what meal it is he will only eat with his hands and point blank refuses to even try cutlery. He just picks up the fork or spoon and moves it to the side or throws it on the floor instantly. Iv tried pre loading it and he still won’t bring it to his mouth. We always eat with him and he sees us using cutlery and Iv tried sitting with him and holding it in his hand then bringing to his mouth but he gets annoyed. Any tips?

My baby is 13 months and still just uses food as a toy if that makes u worry less!

13 months here and I rarely offer cutlery if I'm honest. He's pretty good at eating with his hands and I think the sensory exploration of food is still pretty important right now. I also work in the toddler (2-3 years) room of a day nursery and it's not uncommon for children to prefer using their hands over cutlery when they join us from the 'baby' room 😊

I think cutlery is a 2+ skill. Theres no rush. My 18 yr old still isn't proficient 🤣

It was around 14 months when mine started using them as intended, and at least 16 months before she started using them well. Even so, she still prefers her fingers a lot of the time and she's 2. Don't rush it. Kids can take years to be proficient with cutlery.

Try the Doddl cutlery set. We use that and he feeds himself with it. It’s great

My baby was the same until this past Sunday he randomly started using cutlery and now refuses to eat without it. Even toast he wants cutlery so we have to somehow put it on a fork for him (which is a struggle because he wants to do it himself). I think it’s something that all babies decide to do when they want to and when they are ready, just keep putting cutlery next to them and see when they reach for it.

Gosh I haven’t even tried cutlery. He definitely wouldn’t use that

Mine will use a loaded spoon of given to him, but he doesnt like giving it back.
