At 28 weeks my iron levels had decreased despite being on iron tablets my whole pregnancy. I was sent to the consultant who was accompanied by a really rude older midwife who over ruled the conversation; told the consultant I shouldn’t have an iron transfusion and told me I just needed iron tablets despite already being on them. Fast forward to 31 weeks my bloods have been re done, my iron levels have gone down again and I am being sent back to the same consultant to discuss an iron transfusion. I’m really anxious about going back due to being pushed out the door with no help last time and also feel like I should complain as I wasn’t listened too and my health is being affected?

Do you know the midwife name, you can ask for her not to be in your appointments moving forward. When speaking to the consultant ask all your options and pros and cons of each option so you can make an informed decision

Questions:
I know you’re probably doing everything right already. But have you looked into the inhibitors for iron absorption?
There are many, especially if the iron tablets are non heme iron.
I was severely anemic before I became pregnant, a bout a year before, I was almost hospitalised for it. So I make sure to take iron with as few inhibitors as possible, and try to take vitamin C as well.
Best of luck with the midwife and infusions.

Hospital are the worst for when you are having a baby from my own personal experiences you literally need to stand your ground and put your foot down with them because every single one of them consultants, midwife’s, doctors, nurses will all have their own opinion and it gets confusing with who do you believe is putting your/ babies health first. So if you are unhappy scream it because they will not listen. Complain if you need to but don’t let yourself feel like you’re not being heard because it happens way too much. Do whatever is best for you and baby x

When that happened to me i was put on a double dose of iron tablets and folic acid, my consultant explained that iron levels would not rise without the folic acid, and yep same older rude midwives believe they know everything when it comes to a womans health which is wrong I was ignored and called crazy when in fact I was having sinus tachycardia feeling like i was going to die, if it wasnt for my consultant I dont know what would've happened. CHANGE YOUR MIDWIFE OR DO NOT HAVE THEM IN THE ROOM WITH THE CONSULTANT.
I had no midwifes when I was speaking to my consultant.
