My 26 month old often runs off on his own, I want to eventually stop using our stroller as he often fights to get in it now. But when I want to walk him down the street he often lets go and runs on his own. Is this normal at 2? Any tips to get him to stay calm and hold my hand as we are walking?

Whenever we'd leave the house for a walk I'd turn around and go home if he didn't hold my hand. He got the hang of it eventually.

We set a firm boundary on hand holding. No holding hands means we turn back around and go home. I don't care if I'm carrying a kicking screaming child all the way back home. As long as you're consistent, they get it

So our rule is she can run on the sidewalk but in a parking lot or street she must hold hands. If she lets go of my hand or steps of the sidewalk without a hand 1 of three thing will happen, I pick her up, we go home, or she gets strapped in the stroller.

I have the problem but I got backpack lead on both my babies so whenever they do let go off my hand they cant run anywhere without me

"If you choose not to hold my hand you choose x" and that will change depending on the situation. If we're walking to the park then you choose not to go to the park or if we are out running errands then "if you choose not to hold my hand then you choose to go in the stroller/to go in the carrier" because realistically we cant always go home so thats not my to go answer.

Super firm boundaries. We are very chill parents but once it's about safety and general respect we don't negociate ever. You give your hands or I have to take you in my arms. Period. It's a lot of talking and explaining. Every single time.
