My little girl still has trouble understanding the sounds of letters in words (eg D for Dog, and F for Frog). She says things like “P for snake” when we try to go over some letters, and she just isn’t getting it.
Do they need to have an understanding of the alphabet before they start school in Sept? She’s very good with her numbers but just isn’t quite understanding letters. She can write her name and can recognize about 5-10 letters sometimes, but still has a ways to go! I know they are still very little, I’m just not sure what she’s expected to know when starting school.

It comes under the EYFS knowledge/skills which runs until age 5 so wouldn't be too concerned yet.

My LG recognises her name and that's pretty much it! I'm not worried as her school will begin the more formal learning process from September. We look at the alphabet (e.g. via puzzles, games etc), but I'm not pushing her to know each letter.

They do not need to understand number or letters when they start school. Don't worry.
