My 14 months old boy had fever of 40 since 8 pm, gave him calpol and I woke up at 12 am to see how he was. He was really warm so I took his temperature and it was 41.4. So we took him to A&E. We are still in the waiting room and I am wondering if I overeacted ? He has no other symptoms. His fever is coming down now.

Yes!

Yes take him absolutely

Yes

Yes! You did not overact at all!

Definitely not overreacted! But if in doubt in the future you can also call 111, when I called them it was super straightforward. They would tell you if they think you need to go to A&E, or sometimes they can give you an appointment for urgent care

Always trust your gut and don’t let anyone, doctor or otherwise tell you you’re overreacting. You know your baby better than anyone else and if you think something is wrong, you go to A&E and advocate for your child in whatever way you need to. Always better to be wrong than regretful (but I doubt you’ll ever be wrong either).
Also, for a fever you can always alternate Calpol and ibuprofen (don’t give together unless instructed by t a doctor) and I usually find ibuprofen helps bring down a fever a bit quicker. A fever can give a toddler a febrile seizure where their little bodies can’t cope with the fever. I hope everything is ok and that you got the help you needed for him xx

Yes you are definitely doing the right thing by going to A&E

Always trust your gut. However a fever on its own is not actually that much of a concern as it shows their immune system is working to fight against the virus/infection. However drs are there so that if you are concerned they can reassure you

Yes you have definitely done the right thing!

You did the right thing, that's a high temperature for a little one. Our boy kept spiking high temperature without any other real symptoms and was diagnosed with strep throat so indicated a potentially serious illness that needed prompt antibiotics x

Yes or call 111, they can get you a quick appointment x

100% right. Hope youre ok and get seen soon x

100% go to a&e. It is considered a medical emergency if a young child or baby has a fever above 40.
Fevers this high can point to a serious medical emergency but can also put a huge amount of strain and damage on organ function such as the brain, heart, kidneys and liver.

I would have done the same!!!

Yes I would go immediately they told me anything over 38 any anything over that there’s a huge risk to organs and should be a trip to hospital I hope he feels better soon

Thank you all for your reassurance, advices and replies 🩵 little one has tonsillitis that’s why his temperature was so high. He is currently on antibiotics and he is better today. Thank you all again! 💓
