Hi , I’ve got my first midwife appointment on Friday and I was wondering what to expect or what they do. All I’ve been told is that it’s just a health thing and they take bloods and it can take up to hours .

On mine she came to my house and just went over the questions I did online. No bloods or anything it was just registration

It’ll take no more than 90mins usually.
Health history questions about yourself, your partner/father of baby, direct relatives.
Basic observations done (blood pressure etc) and bloods taken if you’re happy for them to be.
Referral for first scan and any other appts needed depending on your health history.

I had
Co2 test
Blood test
Blood pressure
Height
Weight
And lots of questions

Expect lots of questions about your own health, partners health and both of your immediate families health. I also had blood tests, co2 test and blood pressure, my height and weight had already been done at the hospital as I am under consultant led care.
My first appointment was actually quite fun cause although it was serious the midwife and student I had were so easy going and we just clicked so well so it didn’t feel like an interrogation. They want to get to know you as you will probably have one community midwife that will see you through your pregnancy and into postpartum. I am guessing I am a couple of weeks in front of you so feel free to drop me a message anytime xxx

just asked a bunch of relevant and none relevant questions

So, you'll get general questions about you and dad - such as are you related, do you have any illnesses, do you have any mental health issues, what medication you take, are you taking prenatals, do you feel safe at home, date of last period. They'll take your height and weight. You will be assessed for pregnancy risk, based on different risk factors. You may be given extra folic acid. You will also be talked though where to find info, such as healthy eating and symptoms

basically they are determining the risk level of your pregnancy to make sure you get all the support you need from day one, and going over what you can expect in the care you get too 😊
