Hi all. My LB is 6 weeks old and is my 2nd. I bf’d my first until 14 months so am not new to this but have been struggling alot with my 2nd. He will latch for a min or two and then pull off coughing and crying. So much so that I moved to pumping for him but with a toddler and him needing to be held a lot it’s a struggle to pump all day. Any idea how to get him back on the boob more? Tried shields, hand expressing before, different positions etc.
The pumps I have are also temperamental so would love recommendations for them too.

I've been going through the same thing and it can be so distressing! I also find that pumping and then bottle feeding works, but I struggle to find time to pump more than twice a day and I barely produce anything when I do. That means I sometimes end up having to use formula. I have no advice really, other than maybe trying to do skin to skin and trying again or seeing if it's something else like they have a dirty nappy or gas. Really keen on hearing what others suggest and what ends up working for you because I feel your pain!!

It sounds like you have a fast flow! Express a bit off into a muslin first then when the flow starts to slow latch baby, feed side lying or laid back on the sofa it’ll slow the flow for baby. I exclusively fed both my babies side lying when at home it works a treat. Avoid pumping too much unless it’s to replace feeds as you can create an oversupply which will make the flow issue worse. Take baby off regularly to wind and then re-latch.
Fast flow can also make babies very gassy so I’d highly recommend an osteopath if you struggle with wind. It changed feeding dramatically for this baby he went from 2-5 min feeds to 5-20 mins in one 30 min session as he was more comfortable.
Ultimately as baby gets older they’ll learn to handle the flow better (I had this issue with my first baby too!
I use a pipetta hands free and it works great!

When he comes off , try burping him and then try again.
Sometimes my baby will drink and then cry , it was due to burp.

Has your baby been assessed for a tongue tie? Specifically a posterior tongue tie. I'm going through a similar situation in that my 2nd baby just isn't that great at feeding and they gag 95% of the time when going on the breast. I thought fast flow at first but now I'm thinking it is the latch. I'm pushing through because the thought of pumping whilst chasing after a toddler and a LO that doesn't accept being put down is way too much. I tip my hat to any mother that pumps, it is a hard!
