Hi moms! Posting on here is out of my comfort zone but today we saw MFM because my baby’s tummy has been measuring small and my amniotic fluid has been low for the last 5 appointments. Today they told us he’s measuring on track and my levels are all good. With that being said, MFM told us they can’t find/ weren’t able to see his right kidney. I asked what this means and she said the left kidney just kinda takes over for both and there are plenty of people walking around with only 1 kidney and don’t know it. She didn’t make it a big deal and wants to see us again in 4 weeks to check again. How have we done ultrasounds every week to check his weight and not noticed one was missing? Does anyone have experience with this that can tell me anything? I guess I just want to know what this means in the long run, will he need ultrasounds and extra monitoring all growing up, will he live any kind of different life from being born without one? If anyone has any peace of mind please, I’m just stressed and worried! 31 weeks 3 days!

My husband is a doctor and one of his co fellows in residency was taking an ultrasound course and they just happened to scan his abdomen as the test subject that day for training. Turns out he only has one kidney. He found out at age 35. His labs have always been normal so he would have never known until imaging. Our friend is a super healthy gastroenterologist now - no issues

Same thing to me — they made an appointment with a specialist for an ultra sound about a month or so later for precaution. Everything was fine. Some baby’s just develop slower

My daughter was born with only one kidney! After your kiddo is born they will do a whole bunch of ultrasounds to check renal function of the remaining kidney. You do have to keep an eye out on medications that could harm the kidney. Like you should use tylenol over motrin. When they get older hydration will be extremely important though. When puberty comes around they mentioned the possibility of needing additional hormones but not super sure about that one. But in all reality it's not a super big deal
