Splinters in child’s foot

Hi, does anyone have advice on splinters/getting them out of a child’s foot please? My son got loads in his foot yesterday, the hospital couldn’t get them out, they’re quite deep in the skin&he was crying. Told to just keep an eye out for infection etc and if they don’t come out he may have to be put to sleep to get them out. Has anyone had this, will they just come out, or how did you get them out? Thanks.

What were they? Wood? Hair? Something else?

Can you see them or are they buried deep under the skin?

Do they cause him pain when walking?

the body pushes them out naturally almost always. if they're deep it might take a few days. the only way to get them out is to cut the skin to be able to grab them, so if there are lots you're probably best waiting and checking each morning/evening and use a pair of brow tweezers or similar when you try to get them. once they get further to the surface sometimes you can use your nail to guide them out to where the tweezers can grab them too. often the pain of people trying to get them out is what really hurts so they might not hurt as much while waiting (though i can't promise that!). i had this myself a few times being an idiot kid 😂 but never got infected
