Parental leave UK

I understand that by law you’re entitled to 18 weeks of unpaid leave if you have a child.

Does anyone know all of the rules for this and have they used it?

It’s 4 weeks per year per child
I used a couple of weeks with my first

Technically you need to take it in weekly blocks (5 working days) and give 3 weeks notice to the employer
Here is an overview: https://www.gov.uk/parental-leave/entitlement

However, some employers are way more relaxed about it & don’t need much notice - for example, instead of a block, use few days only (ex 2 days in June and 3 in July = 1 weekly block), or every Friday off for next five weeks (also equals 1 weekly block). Some managers have no clue this exists! Best to discuss with them ways you can approach this xx

Oh also, technically, those 18 weeks are total between all employers but I don’t think anyone keeps count? Ex I took 3 weeks total in the last 5 years. But if I change employer they would have no idea how many weeks I took. I’m fairly sure even my own employer is not keeping track 😂
