My son is just about 8 months old and gonna start teaching him makaton for food and drink, anyone that’s done this how did it go and how long did it take for your little one to learn and use the makaton

I didn’t however I did go on a sing and sign course via zoom recomended by my daughters school as she was preverbal. There are lots of YouTube videos online but also the hv or childrens centre might be able to point you in the right direction.

I did it constantly from birth, starting with the sign for milk. And each stage we got to and he was trying to communicate something I’d learn and teach him the sign for it. By 1 he was signing for most things and it really helped us to communicate with him, especially being such a shy boy - it gives him the ability to communicate if he’s feeling to shy to speak. He is now two and talking more but still signs along side it, I’m forever finding the signs for new things as he’s trying to learn to pronounce words. He very recently started saying ‘more’ instead of signing it so he’s definitely becoming more confident with speech ☺️
