I had one years ago when I was first eligible and it was so painful. The nurse was struggling to do it and then asked if I was a virgin. Then said I didn't need one as I'm a virgin. Obviously since then I lost my virginity. I've been with my husband for 8 years now and had 2 children.

I had my first smear at 28 because I was pregnant when I first became eligible and then pregnant quickly again afterwards. I’ve had abnormal cells and had to have colposcopy’s and biopsy’s ever since. Personally I’d never miss a smear. They are so, so important. I don’t find them painful anyway but regardless I’d do it for the reassurance that everything is okay. Cervical cancer is so much more treatable when caught early.

If the experience is too painful for you, you should be referred for pain relief while carrying it out. Like Gemma says, they’re so important to get done.
