Is this labour?

If your waters didn’t break, were you sure you were in labour (when you actually were)?

Context: I’ve been having horrendous stomach cramps that come and go, together with diarrhoea. I don’t think it’s labour so just wonder if I’ll just ‘know’ when it is?!

I wasn’t sure as I had early labour, was much like yours sounds, but no pattern to it. I did get checked out in my normal midwife appt, I had early labour for 3 days 🙃 then it intensified and yes then I knew it was time!

I had to have my water manually broke all three pregnancies. They never broke on their own. I basically went to the hospital when my contractions were closer together. I was pretty confident I was in labor. But I do get how it’s kind of confusing because a lot of people just go once their water breaks.

I was ten days late and it started like a small ripple down my back which moved to my front. My youngest was born en caul so my waters didn’t break.

My water didn’t break with my second until just before I was pushing him out. I had Braxton hicks every day 4 weeks prior and lightning crotch for the last 2 weeks so I was ready to get him out 😂 my contractions started the day before but stopped and then came back the next day but carried on, I timed how often they were coming. Once they got regular and more intense I rang the midwives

I knew with my first 2 with no waters broken BUT I was induced. With my second, after they put they foley thing in I laboured at home all night. It truly started when the foley thing fell out so I knew I was 4 cms then. But was just having irregular cramps that came and went like you say. I slept for an hour and a half then woke up in labour. I knew quickly it was true labour because the contractions were steady every couple mins and would last a few mins and felt intense. I had to stand up and move through them. That’s how you know. When you can’t sit still through it.

I wasn't sure, mine started as lower back ache that later moved round to my front in intense waves every couple of minutes. I was in hospital already being induced when it started and I was using my contraction timer which was telling me I was definitely in established labour but I didn't want to bother the nurses just in case I wasn't 😂😂 when I finally did and they came to check me I was 8cm dilated 😂😂

My waters didn't break. The pain was so bad I could only sit in one spot so I knew it was labour. I also used a contraction timer x

My water didn’t break but I had awful back ache and thought it was my office chair until my colleague said his wife was the same and I was in labour 🤣 went for a check and turns out I was well and truly in labour. I did the night before get a bad belly but thought that’s a week 38 thing.

I had a high risk pregnancy so I was very closely monitored by the end of the pregnancy. I experienced Braxton Hicks many times but the week before my induction I was having small contractions all week and felt nothing. So you could be in labor and not even know it for a while!

That being said, when active labor hits, you will definitely know it 😧

I wasn't sure with my first, I just started feeling sick like I was going to throw up but never did. I was 38 w. I was nauseated and feeling tired, so my mom rang the OB who said to go in and check. I wasn't sure what the pain was supposed to feel like and by the time we made it into the hospital I was nearly 4cm dilated. I had only JUST trickled a bit right before we left which is when we knew it wasn't just BH.

With my second I needed an induction because my BP was too high at my 37w checkup with OB so I went to L&D from her office. I had BH contractions starting at about 30/32 w and lost my mucus plug gradually almost 3 weeks prior and steadily leading up to that. Once they started the oxytocin drip my body progressed pretty naturally and I effaced without needing a foley balloon and he was born within 24 hrs.

If you feel 'off' and timing is more consistent with duration and space between (five min between, lasting 1-2 mins per contraction/belly tightness) then it's progressing into active labor 🙏🏼

For my second, I woke up with random cramps starting around 5a, the third time I woke I thought...maybe these are contractions. I started timing them and they didn't really organize into a regular pattern until 11ish. By then we had called the hospital for advice and they said since I didn't want an epi l, if I was in labor, I could come in at any time or wait it out until it they became difficult. We didn't get to the hospital until after 1, I was 6cm dilated and baby was born within an hour. We actually left for the hospital when it was difficult to do anything during a contraction, I was more or less focused on breathing through them. (It was also probably noon when we left but we had drop off our oldest and the hospital is about 45mins from us)

Water was broke at the hospital, just before baby came out.

I’M SO SICK OF DUE DATES

They count 40w from your last period, adjust based off baby’s growth, and then call it a day.
Meanwhile it’s mentally so tough to approach your “due date” and mamas are getting pressured to be induced etc bc they’re past their “due date” and
WHAT ARE WE EVEN TALKING ABOUT??
As if babies in the womb know our schedule??

Imagine if we assigned due dates for babies to be walking by or crawling by. Or a due date for a mama to have healed by post-birth?
I guess we do actually do that, but is that ok?? Also ofc we can have hard lines of “this is no longer normal/safe” but that would be at like 43 weeks, NOT 40!!! So many ladies deliver between 40 and 41 weeks! Many even go 42!
Why are we making women feel like there’s a deadline when it’s actually not a deadline AND an unrealistic expectation? Why don’t we just have a safety “cut off” or something like with other milestones?

Does anyone get what I’m saying?? Does anyone agree???

C-section booked for after due date

I’m a ftm and elected for a c-section but they said there’s no slots in my 39th week so I’ve been booked in for the day after my due date 😳. This gives me a lot of anxiety and part of the reason I wanted a CS was to avoid the angst around going into labour etc and the CS being “emergency”/unplanned. Anyone else experienced this or known of this to happen?

Midwife issues

Hey girlies, I’m 22 weeks and I’ve met my ‘actual’ midwife once when I was 8 weeks.

Whenever ive text her, she takes like 4/5 days to reply- literally everytime! I know she has other patients of course and she has made me aware that her days are very busy as she was meant to call me one afternoon at 1pm (my work break) but actually called me at 5pm.

She doesn’t ask how im feeling or how baby is, nothing about my journey with her so far has felt personal or like she actually cares? I know it’s her job but as a FTM it would be nice to feel a bit more supported I guess?

I had a midwife appt at my drs a few weeks back and it was a different midwife, the experience was the same so I don’t know if this is just a midwife thing? Although my friends have had different/great experiences themselves.

For reference, I’m based in the UK and know the midwives are overworked in the NHS, so I don’t expect miracles.. just a bit more personalised care?

Am I mad????

20 week scan - anterior placenta

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and the guy sonographer was the least enthusiastic person ever. It was like he couldnt be bothered and it was very under whelming. I didnt feel comfortable asking questions and when I did, he was explaining it in medical terms that I obviously dont understand. When I got the results through later, it said that I have an anterior placenta. I didnt know what this meant so have googled it but also annoyed that he didnt explain this to us. I think ive felt some movement the last few days, but only some! Ive since read that if you have an anterior placenta then its normal to have delayed feelings of movements. I dont feel happy with the sonographer, has anyone requested a 2nd 20 week scan and is this even possible?

Scheduled cesarean

I got a call today from my dr wanting to discuss my ultrasound. She told me my baby is already measuring in the 90th percentile and she’s a big baby. (I’m only 27 weeks tomorrow) She told me that once I get a little further I’ll need a growth scan so I’ll then know if I’m able to deliver naturally.
My first daughter I had naturally and I loved my experience. My son I had to have an emergency cesarean due to hospital negligence and I feel completely robbed of my special day and still deal with trauma from it. This is my last baby, and I planned on having her naturally until today, when they told me I may not be able to due to her size. I’m really bummed about the idea of not being able to have her naturally. Maybe it’s because of the trauma from my last experience and feeling robbed of it all. I was the last one to hold my son after he was born. I don’t remember most of it and the worst part is I have mentally checked out from it to the point I can’t tell you how much he weighed, how long he was or even what time he was born. It just makes me sad to even think about it. Not to mention the recovery is absolute hell.
I don’t know much about the actual process of a scheduled caesarean. If someone could shed a little light in hopes it’ll help me prepare myself mentally, it would be really appreciated.
