I recently came to find out that my own mother and my elder stepdaughter both thought I went through IVF, even though throughout the IUI process I talked about the mechanics of it and how it differs from IVF. I also mentioned several times that my husband and I decided that if we did multiple IUIs without conceiving, we wouldn’t pursue IVF.
I also didn’t have to do the intense prep or egg retrieval, which both would’ve been noticeable and I would’ve talked about it during the process.
I wonder if they just have terrible memories and even though they did know the difference at the time, they have since formed false memories based on the more widely known procedure.

It can be confusing for people that have never worked in the field or gone through the process themselves.

I encountered various people who were just like OK you're going through fertility treatment, great you'll probably get pregnant soon. No one really did any research about it and not many people asked about it. I didn't say when we were doing a cycle because I didn't want the added pressure and disappointment but I did say after a failed transfer. I imagine you told them, they knew and understood, but didn't store it as particularly important information and once you were pregnant didn't give it much thought. Which I think is pretty disappointing but pretty standard as well. I didn't talk about my journey at the time because I found it too painful. I talk about it now because I've found it's something people don't know much about- even if they know someone who's done it. We had 6 failed rounds of IUI, and when I open with that I'm almost always asked what it is!

A quad mum I follow on Instagram had IUI, and the comments she gets about choosing quads and having IVF is hilarious to me. I didn't realise how many people didn't know how different the procedures are.
