Any self employed mums that can help me understand this?
I was employed last time I was pregnant so this is all new to me!
I applied for maternity allowance and they've said they're only awarding me £27 a week which doesn't make sense.
It says this might be because I haven't paid enough NI contributions and if I pay more then I might get the higher MA award but I have paid enough NI contributions and have evidence of this so don't understand why they're saying this.
Anyone had any experience of this?

I have been battling to get Maternity Allowance for months! I don't know if my experience is helpful but it's also new to me as I was employed last time I took maternity leave too.
Took me ages to have my application even looked at, because HMRC had messed something up and hadn't registered me as self-employed for some reason. Anyway got that sorted. I was sent a letter asking me to pay £45.50 NI contributions to top me up to the threshold to allow me to receive any amount of maternity allowance at all. Still waiting to hear how much I'm going to be awarded, but I don't anticipate it's going to be much.
You say you have paid enough NI contributions, and you haven't had a letter asking you to pay more, so it sounds like they are just awarding this based on your most recent tax return etc.
The only advice I can offer is to call Maternity Allowance (I have a phone number somewhere if you need one) and ask them to clarify the amount and what it's based on, if you think you should get more.
