My son turns 2 in 2 days, for 2 weeks straight now, every single day he will not stop having tantrums over the tiniest things, literally screaming at the top of his lungs, or bitting, kicking, slapping me. He has broken 2 things just this week, a vase and a candle, just throwing everything at the minute. When I tell him off he just laughs at me, and won’t listen. But anyone else he listens too. I’m a single mum and it’s definitely taking a toll on me, my family just say to discipline him, like sit him in a corner for time out but I’ve tried he doesn’t understand. The last couple of days has been non stop screaming, I wish I could sit in a quiet room by myself but that’s impossible. People say because it’s his safe space which I understand but I don’t get why he doesn’t listen to me. Anyone else having this, and how to help too, I really need it x

I’m sorry. Is he getting enough sleep? Eliminate or reduce screen time

My daughter is almost
Two and pretty defiant

Yes same and he is dropping his nap where it was my only break of the day. I think we just have to be strong

I am a single mum too, I 100% understand your situation. My little one does this too. Randomly would start throwing things, biting, pulling my hair or slapping me. I just stop him again and again. I remove him from the situation, we go to a quiet place like in his play tent or the bedroom where there is less stimulation. I have started reducing his screen time, not that it was a lot anyway. Now it’s only 30 mins a day. He has his Tonie box so he listens to stories & songs when he wants to.

Same here! My boy turned 2 a week ago and by goodness gracious me, it’s as though a switch has flicked… I have to really dig deep and remind myself of the parent I want to be for him at the moment. It’s so so hard.. I don’t feel like I can advise too much at the moment but I know it’s super developmentally appropriate for their age. I’ve read that at this age they’re becoming their own human, figuring out what they like and what they don’t like, realising that they actually have their own preferences rather than automatically going along with everything like they have since they were born. They test boundaries to see how far they get away with stuff whilst still being safe with you. Kids can laugh after being told off out of nervousness, almost like a survival technique but it can feel like they’re mocking you. They aren’t I promise. My boy use to be great at listening and now…

A 2 year old shouldn’t have more than 1 hr screen time a day ideally so it may be that he’s lashing out because you’re taking the screens away after 2 hrs of having it? Have a look at a wireless speaker if you have Spotify then there’s a lot of the audiobooks similar or the same as a lot of the tonies - we have the tonie box but £15 a pop for a character and some the audio doesn’t last for very long I wish I just got a wireless speaker tbh 😂 we also have the Disney baby storytime projector (slightly annoying you have to sit there pressing the play button to switch slides) but it’s a nice calming way to incorporate a picture story with audio rather than a tv with a show or film, I think they do one by little tikes as well which might be better. I keep to the same routine of dinner / play / bath / settle and bed very low stim and calming for my son as this what works for him, every child is different though and I’m in no way criticising I understand how difficult some days can be

Right there with you, turned 2 at the start of the month. Like others have said it's like a switch has been flicked! Big feelings, big tantrums and fighting naps 😅 missing my happy little boy and the smaller tantrums that felt big at the time!
