Going back to work after maternity leave

I have recently gone to work after 6 months maternity leave. I would have loved longer with my baby but unfortunately finances come into it.

The problem that I have is before I left, I was promised once I completed my course, I would receive a pay rise. This was amazing new to me as me and my partner are trying to save a house deposit for our first home. Anyway, I completely the course a few weeks before going for maternity leave.

Since returning, I have been chucked in the deep end in the new qualified role, with no support, and no history of any of the work I’m expected to as I have not been there to be in the loop.

I have asked if I am still going to receive the pay rise seeing as I’m already expecting to carry out the new job role and I have been told that I have to work a few months to demonstrate the qualification.

I understand this from a business point of view but personally I think it’s very unfair as the pay rise was promised once completion of the course not as a probation period.

I just feel like because I’ve had a baby I have prove myself all over again and I find it really unfair.

Any opinions?

This is very frustrating. I work in HR so this would be my advice:

- pull together any emails or communication you have re. the pay rise once completion of the course so you have it in writing what they offered. (If it was a verbal agreement draft an email stating the date you had the chat, with who, and what was said)
- if they never said there would be this ‘probation period’, ask in your email why there is now a change. I.e. we spoke about me completing the course would lead me to have an increased salary, now I have been told I need to demonstrate several months before the rise, could you tell me why it has changed?
- if it is a new role, returning from mat leave aside, anyone would expect to have training in a new role, so ask them if you will be receiving any form of training or mentoring to help you. It is unfair to just expect you to know, especially after just returning from mat leave, what you are doing!

Can message me if you’d like anymore info xx
