throwing

my (almost) 20 month old throws EVERYTHING! more so when he’s frustrated, but it’s seeming to become constant now. i’m not sure what to do, we always tell him to be gentle/nice with his toys and the things that he’s throwing, but that doesn’t really work. it’s gotten to the point where he’s now throwing things at the cats and laughing about it. we’ve tried everything from being gentle and nicely explaining things to him, to slightly raising our voices at him. nothing seems to work and it’s getting frustrating😅 is this just a phase that i have to deal with or is there anything else we can try? any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I think you have to catch him in the act. Take the object away and firmly say “no!”

Every. Single. Time.

No more trying different methods…just be consistent with one. I think he’ll figure it out with time—just might require some patience until he gets there.

Mine is 19 months, when she was 17-18 months old she'd also do something similar. I was the only one at first enforcing her to stop because I'm a sahm, so when Daddy was home she thought it was funny, if we both look at her and say No sternly, eventually she caught on. She has to be allowed to do the behavior to some extent to be able to fully learn. I believe having multiple people saying no could help. Maybe show her how to gently pet, even at random times. Say "pet, and then gentle pet"
My 19 month old will gently pet now while saying pet. She will still try to grab that tail though 😮‍💨

In addition to what others have suggested, create a safe place where throwing is allowed so when that energy comes up you can say "we dont throw toys, but if you want to throw, let's set up your ball game". I used paper cups and soft balls and set them up so my son could throw the balls at the cups to try to knock them over. Also with hitting we tell him that he can not hit one of us or the animals but he can go away from us and hit a pillow so we practice hitting a pillow when he feels like he wants to hit.

“keep that in your hands” “gently put that down” 👍🏼reminds them what to DO
“Don’t throw that” 👎🏼 sounds like you said throw that
