Combined feeding my 4 week old

Hi mama’s! Need some help/advice in terms of your experiences with combined feeding.

I’m a first-time mum currently exclusively breastfeeding 4 week old but returning to work when she’s about 2-2.5 months old. Will be away from her 3 days a week, 7am to 7pm (feeling a lot of that dreaded mum guilt already 😂😫)

How did you combined feeding mums find it? I’m scared my baby will go off my boob once I introduce a bottle. How did you find it expressing at work?

It took us a long time to find a bottle she would accept, so for your babysitters sake, trial start a couple weeks before. Mine still definitely prefers the breast but she will take a bottle. I went back to work after 10 weeks. No issues.

Usually when moms not around baby will take a bottle. My daughter never let me feed her out of a bottle but when I was at work my sister would feed her no problem!

Congrats on the baby hun❤️❤️❤️

Congratulations! I started giving my little guy a bottle overnight from the beginning. There are definitely mixed opinions on the whole “nipple confusion” topic, but personally I just got bottles designed for breastfed babies. They have nipples with different flow rates depending on age. My guy is 11 weeks old and I had to go back to work a week ago so we’ve been switching back and forth from boob to bottle without issues. Good luck mama! 💙

I did the same kind of. I'm in the Army so I was away from her for 1 weekend a month. Which hurt my supply ALOT. It stressed her out to have to get it back up, just for it to go down again. It was so much stress for her and I. I ended up having to formula feed. And I won't lie, there isnt a single day I dont kick my self for trying harder. Feeling like there was more I could and/or should have done. And I didnt. But that being said, I have a very healthy baby girl so just remember if she does go off Boob, it's okay, as long as shes healthy ❤❤ you're doing great mama!!!!

I introduced my son to a bottle by nursing then finishing off the feeding with a bottle. He took to it right away

I wanted to only breastfeed my daughter but I couldn't produce enough milk. So I breastfed as much as I could and filled her the rest of the way up with a bottle. She never gave me trouble taking breast after introducing a bottle..I also used the bottles specifically for breastfeeding moms. Don't remember what they were though this was 5 years ago and I gave the worst memory

I gave my baby the formula from the bottle the first night we came home from the hospital because i was not producing anything! every child is different so i’m lucky he takes both bottle and nipple well. he recently, at 7 weeks, started a nipple strike that lasted 2 days but he’s back on the boobs! whew! good luck! hope everything works out!

My little one was losing weight so I had to pump to make sure she was getting enough. I started bottle feeding her during her first week and she’s now 3 weeks and will still take the boob as well.

It took my son a while to accept bottles and even then he preferred breastfeeding more

I’ve been back to work for about 2 months now (my baby is 5 months). I would suggest starting to give your baby a bottle maybe once a day. This way the baby starts learning to get used to it and you get used to pumping. Also if you want your baby to successfully use a bottle while away from you, continue to give them one even when you are with them. I made that mistake on vacation (exclusively nursed her) now we are having trouble with her drinking at school, but getting better. It will definitely have its ups and downs but my little girl is happy and healthy. Knock on wood, hasn’t been sick yet from daycare because of my milk!

I recomend starting a bottle a day now. Get LO used to it before you leave. Also, make sure you are using only premie sized nipples (dr browns makes them and target carries them in store.) Also, have anyone feeding LO while your gone watch YouTube videos on paced bottle feeding. We had a family member use size 1 nipples on my first baby and let him suck bottles down and he started hated nursing. Premie nipples make it so they have to work at the bottle and dont prefer it over breast. Paced feedings mimic nursing so they dont get used to having a feed be done in 5 minutes like they normally would with a bottle.

I used a bottle a couple time in the beginning and had no issues I've used lansinoh and avent use the smallest flow and look up paced feeding

I used a bottle and breastfed from early on and mine never had trouble.

My son refused to latch for the first month. So I gave him bottle until he learned. Once he learned mostly breastfed and when I went back to work (Army) I really had to stay on myself about pumping bc even though they HAVE to let you pump when it’s time sometimes the day just flies right by you and you realize you’ve only pumped once. But he just eats so much that I began supplementing with formula. So I have a healthy 9 1/2 month old baby boy. He take the bottle, sippy cup, nipple and solid food just fine! If you plan to continue breast feeding you have to remember your pump bag and to pump at work. Good luck mama!

My baby girl took to both really well. And the change between boob and bottle went really smoothly x good luck mama. X

I run a home childcare. I have never had a mom in my 12 years not be able to nurse and bottle feed. There have been times when a mom is not able to pump enough while working to keep up the supply so formula would then be introduced. However the mom's that pumped regularly every 2 or 3 hours have been able to supply breastmilk for childcare then nurse before and after. I think it has more to do with the type of work you do and if you will be able to manage it. Don't be so hard on yourself!

I do both . Have since my son has been born . I find that if I fed him with boob first (15 min on each side ) then bottle feed for 15 min he gets used to what a boob is like and bottle is like . It really depends on the baby though . The younger the better but it’s something you have to turn into routine . Just be warned it could go good or bad . Worst thing to happen is you have to pump lots and eventually boob dries up

I recommend using the bottles that are close to boobs. Like the Medellin and Avente ones. My day is 10 months and will only take these ones

It's a scary thing for sure because am a first time mom too and I had the same fear. But I have been breastfeeding when I get home from work and in the morning before I go to work. Its working out well and when am home on my days off I do it through the day to also continue to make milk.

My newborn is 5 weeks. I don’t produce enough breastmilk to solely nurse. He’s been back and forth bottle to boob since he was born. We supplement with formula (which I’m not a HUGE fan of, but it’s necessary). We don’t have any problems. He dives for my boobs first and foremost. The bottle did make him lazy tho. He likes the ease of even the slowest flow bottles but he's good about both.

I didn't introduce my babe to a bottle until around 4 weeks, but still primarily breastfed until I went back to work at 3 months. He was good at taking it, but wasn't great with using it well at first (couldn't figure out the difference from breast in latch and swallowing, tended to gulp a lot of air). Now I pump twice a day when I'm at work and he's fine at drinking those bottles. Thankfully, he still loves the boob, so anytime I'm home, that's how he's fed. Also, not sure if this made a difference, but we also didn't offer a pacifier until about 4 weeks. He wasn't a fan the first few months, but will take it sometimes the past 2, though we try to be sparing with it.

When do things get easier?

As we entered the 9-12 month stage, my son started crawling and pulling himself up. He also became more clingy and does not play alone, still doesnt sleep through the night, and this week has been sick (so EVERYTHING amplified). I am tired and overwhelmed. Please lie and tell me things get better. 🥺

Colostrum storing?

Has anyone successfully extracted colostrum before the baby’s born? Apparently it gets produced from 16w pregnant and you can start storing it in the freezer but I’m 34w looking at my nipples and the syringes on amazon wondering how it works?? Like what did you use and did it hurt? 🥲

4 month bed time

What time do you put your babies to bed?
What time do you start your 'routine?'
My LO currently goes to bed around 10.30pm, and I know i need to start bringing it forward. Everytime ive tried, it takes longer for my LO to settle.
We are exclusively breastfeeding. Any advice Mamas?

Self settling

Any tips or advice of how to teach 6.5month old to self settle? I’m up multiple times in the night to cuddle her back to sleep and put the dummy in. I understand she will wake up and want a cuddle etc but any tips on self settling would be appreciated 🥰

Baby losing weight

Hi all, it's been a long time since I had a baby (my son is 15!). My daughter is 10 days old and was 9lb born, she has since lost weight at every appointment and is at a 12% loss. I am breast feeding every two hours for over an hour and topping her up every feed. I pump and can get 60ml in 10 minutes so I know my supply is okay. Anyone had this before? Can give me some tips? I currently feel like I'm letting my baby down.
